About Saint Vitus Feast

Every year in mid-June, Eboli pauses to honor its patron saint. The Patronal Feast of Saint Vitus the Martyr is the heartbeat of this city in the Sele Plain, in the province of Salerno. Solemn masses at the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria della Pietà, the symbolic handing over of the city keys, the unique dog blessing, and the evening procession through the historic center blend seamlessly with the 'Fiori e Sapori di San Vito' agricultural and floral fair, filling Piazza della Repubblica with market stalls, festive lights, and live performances.

The patron saint who sets the rhythm for Eboli

In Eboli, a city of nearly forty thousand residents overlooking the Sele Plain in the province of Salerno, June 15th is no ordinary day: it is the feast of Saint Vitus the Martyr, the city's patron saint. For centuries, devotion to the Saint has marked the community's calendar, culminating in a day when business slows down, city streets fill with stalls and illuminations, and thousands gather along Corso Umberto I to watch the statue pass. It is the most cherished civil and religious event in the Municipality of Eboli and one of the most attended in all of southern Campania.

Who was Saint Vitus and why are dogs blessed in Eboli?

Vitus, a young Sicilian martyr venerated throughout Europe, is invoked as the protector of dancers and animals, particularly dogs. This leads to the most curious and beloved ritual of the Eboli festival: the blessing of the dogs, held on the steps of the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria della Pietà after the evening Mass. It is a cheerful, family-friendly moment—and a photographer's favorite—that coexists perfectly with the liturgical solemnity of the patron's day. The same tradition includes the raising of the Saint Vitus cloth, the display of the banner featuring the Saint's image that symbolically opens his dedicated month, and the arrival of the small 'San Vitillo' statue, welcomed in procession by the faithful.

The June 15th Procession

The highlight of the festival is the evening procession on June 15th, which departs around 8:00 PM from the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria della Pietà in Piazza della Repubblica. It winds through the city's main arteries: Corso Umberto I, Piazza Borgo, Via Vittorio Veneto, Via Giacomo Matteotti, and Viale Amendola. The pageant, accompanied by confraternities and a marching band, draws thousands of devotees waiting along the streets, on decorated balconies, and in front of home altars. Before the departure, the mayor symbolically presents the keys of the city to the patron saint, a gesture that renews the bond between Eboli and Saint Vitus every year. The liturgical calendar is packed throughout the day, with Holy Masses from early morning and a traditional Mass dedicated to local farmers.

'Fiori e Sapori di San Vito': The fair in Piazza della Repubblica

Alongside religious rites, the festival preserves its rural roots. The 'Fiori e Sapori di San Vito' fair, set up in Piazza della Repubblica in collaboration with Coldiretti Salerno, continues the legacy of the ancient Saint Vitus Festival, showcasing the agricultural and floral products of the region: Campania buffalo mozzarella, vegetables, preserves, olive oil, pastries, and the ornamental plants that make the Sele Plain one of Italy's most dynamic agricultural hubs. Among the most anticipated treats is the spumone di San Vito, a gelato dessert traditionally linked to the patron's feast day.

The civil program

The secular side of the festivities enlivens Piazza della Repubblica and the historic center with concerts, shows, photo exhibitions, pet-friendly events, and special openings of cultural sites, starting with the ManES – National Archaeological Museum of Eboli. Over the years, the festival has also hosted 'Il Ballo di San Vito – Mediterranean Festival,' an event dedicated to rediscovering traditional Campania music and its fusion with Mediterranean musical styles, alongside sporting events, charity initiatives, and activities for children.

The festival's finale in Santa Cecilia

Devotion is not limited to the city center: in the Santa Cecilia district, the San Vito al Sele church dedicates its own weekend to the patron, featuring a dog blessing on Saturday evening, a solemn procession on Sunday afternoon, and a final concert that closes the cycle of Eboli celebrations with music.

Why it's worth the trip

Visitors arriving in Eboli for Saint Vitus will find an authentic folk festival, not one staged for tourists, in a city made famous by Carlo Levi's title, 'Christ Stopped at Eboli.' Between services, you can explore the medieval historic center with the Colonna Castle, the Basilica of San Pietro alli Marmi, and the ManES museum, before heading down to the coast or up toward the Picentini Mountains: Eboli is the natural gateway between Salerno, the Cilento, and the Vallo di Diano.
