The fishing village on the Amalfi Coast celebrates its patron saint with a sea procession and midnight fireworks
The Patronal Feast of Saint Peter the Apostle is the most heartfelt moment of the year for the town of Cetara, in the province of Salerno, one of the smallest and most authentic villages on the Amalfi Coast in Campania. Here, the patron saint is not an abstract figure: Saint Peter is the fisherman par excellence, and Cetara has lived for centuries on fishing, anchovies, and its famous colatura (anchovy sauce). The June 29th recurrence, the solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, marks the symbolic start of summer and attracts emigrants, local families, curious onlookers, and tourists from across the entire Coast.
The heart of the festival is the evening procession. The statue of the saint is placed on a boat-shaped platform and carried on the shoulders of fishermen, who move with the traditional rhythmic gait that mimics the rolling of the waves. The procession winds through the main streets of the village, adorned with lights, climbs to the upper part of the town, and then descends back toward the marina.
It is a gesture that encapsulates the entire maritime identity of the village: asking the saint for protection for those who go to sea and for an abundant catch for the coming year.
The return to the church is the most spectacular moment: the bearers charge up the steps of the church of Saint Peter the Apostle, amidst applause and emotion. Shortly after, as the clock strikes midnight, the fireworks display lights up the waters of the bay: the pyrotechnics are launched from the breakwater of the fishing port, illuminating the natural amphitheater of houses cascading down to the sea. It is one of the most photographed images of the entire Coast.
The festivities begin on the eve, June 28th, with a prayer for those lost at sea and the laying of a laurel wreath at Largo Marina, followed in the evening by the lucernarium rite, the vigil mass, and the Eucharistic procession through the village streets. The patronal day alternates between Eucharistic celebrations, often presided over by the Archbishop of the Diocese of Amalfi-Cava de' Tirreni, a solemn procession, and brass band concerts in Piazza San Francesco. The organization is managed by the Saint Peter the Apostle Festival Committee together with the Parish and the Municipality of Cetara.
The devotion does not end on June 29th. In the following days, the village celebrates The Octave of Saint Peter, with a short procession toward Largo Marina and a musical moment which, in recent years, has taken the form of The Octave in Music, a free symphonic concert promoted by the Pro Loco of Cetara in Piazza San Francesco. Faith, spirituality, and popular participation thus intertwine for over a week.
Those who come to Cetara for Saint Peter do not witness a re-enactment staged for tourists, but a genuine festival that the village organizes for itself. The contrast between the solemnity of the procession and the explosion of the midnight fireworks, with boats in the roadstead and the SS 163 Amalfitana road closed to traffic to leave the streets to the people, offers a sincere portrait of the Amalfi Coast away from the most crowded circuits.
In 2026, the village of Cetara, in the province of Salerno, once again renewed its appointment with its patron saint. The eve of June 28th saw a prayer for those lost at sea with the laying of a laurel wreath at Largo Marina, the lucernarium rite, the vigil mass for the solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, and the evening Eucharistic procession, followed by a brass band concert.
On June 29th, Eucharistic celebrations accompanied the day until the solemn procession with the effigy of Saint Peter the Apostle, carried on the shoulders of fishermen on a boat-shaped platform until the blessing of the sea on the shore. The evening concluded with a brass band concert in Piazza San Francesco and the grand midnight fireworks display, organized by Pirolandia srl and launched from the breakwater of the fishing port, with approximately 2,800 fireworks oriented toward the sea.
For the first time in years, no special maritime connections to Cetara were activated. The procession and the main moments of the festival were broadcast live by Telenuova, channel 92 of digital terrestrial television, from 6:30 PM until the end of the fireworks, as well as streamed on the broadcaster's social media channels.
Cetara is located on the SS 163 Amalfitana road, about 10 km from Vietri sul Mare and 15 km from Salerno. By train: Salerno station, then SITA Sud bus toward Amalfi. By car: take the Vietri sul Mare exit on the A3 motorway. Please note that on the evening of the patronal feast, vehicular traffic is suspended in the center from 7:00 PM and the SS 163 is closed to traffic from 8:00 PM, with blockades at the entrances of Vietri sul Mare and Maiori: it is advisable to arrive in the afternoon and park outside the village.
In past years, Travelmar has operated special trips from Salerno and boats dedicated to viewing the fireworks; however, the service is not guaranteed every year and was suspended in 2026. During the fireworks display, the port of Cetara is closed and a maritime area is prohibited to navigation.
For safety reasons, the maximum number of people allowed in the public areas of the port is limited (2,000 units in 2026), and a security service is provided with law enforcement, civil protection, and medical staff. Please respect the minimum distance from the fireworks launch point.
All celebrations, the procession, the brass band concerts, and the fireworks display are free of charge.
Book restaurants and accommodation in advance: the village is very small and is packed during the patronal weekend. You must try, of course, the spaghetti with Cetara anchovy sauce.
