Summer open-air film festival in the Cavea of the Botanical Garden of Messina
Every summer, the Cavea of the "Pietro Castelli" Botanical Garden, the historic garden of the University of Messina founded in the 17th century, transforms into a charming open-air cinema arena. Cinema in Orto is an open-air film festival that, for over ten years, has offered the Messina public a selection of rare, restored, or lesser-known films, with a special focus on 20th-century Italian and Sicilian cinema.
The festival does not chase commercial hits; its identity lies in the rediscovery of often-forgotten films, from masterpieces of Neorealism to popular comedies, as well as films shot in Sicily or linked to local actors and crews. Over the years, the festival has paid tribute to cinema figures connected to the city of the Strait, from Messina-born actors to local directors and productions, returning to the public a cinematic heritage that would otherwise be difficult to see on the big screen.
Screenings are held in the Cavea, the open-air amphitheater of the Botanical Garden, surrounded by palms, succulents, and Mediterranean flora. The garden opens in the evening and screenings begin at 9:00 PM. Admission is free, but for safety reasons, access is limited to a maximum number of participants: once capacity is reached, the gate is closed, so it is advisable to arrive early.
Cinema in Orto is promoted by the "Pietro Castelli" Botanical Garden and Cineforum Orione, in collaboration with the Antonello da Messina Association. The event takes place in the heart of Messina, the capital of its province in Sicily, and has become a staple of the city's cultural summer, blending cinema, nature, and historical memory in a unique setting.
The twelfth edition of Cinema in Orto is scheduled from June 29 to July 9, 2026, in the Cavea of the "Pietro Castelli" Botanical Garden in Messina. The 2026 edition pays tribute to the legendary Sicilian comedy duo Franco Franchi and Ciccio Ingrassia; the announced program includes the screening of Due marines e un generale.
As per tradition, screenings begin at 9:00 PM with the garden opening in the evening; admission is free but capacity is limited for safety reasons. The festival is organized by the "Pietro Castelli" Botanical Garden and Cineforum Orione in collaboration with the Antonello da Messina Association.
The complete program of the evenings is published on the Botanical Garden's website in the weeks leading up to the start of the festival.
The 12th edition (June 29 – July 9, 2026) offers a tribute to the Sicilian comedy duo Franco Franchi and Ciccio Ingrassia.
Screenings begin at 9:00 PM in the Cavea of the Botanical Garden. The detailed calendar of all evenings (titles, dates, and directors) is published on the official Botanical Garden website in the weeks preceding the festival.
The "Pietro Castelli" Botanical Garden is located in the center of Messina, near Piazza XX Settembre, within walking distance of the central station and well-served by public transport. If arriving by car, we recommend using city center parking, given the restricted traffic zone.
Admission to the screenings is free, but capacity is limited for safety reasons (approximately 85 seats). Once the maximum number is reached, the gate is closed. We advise arriving well before the 9:00 PM start time.
The evenings are held outdoors: bring a light sweater for the cooler hours. For updated information, check the Botanical Garden's website or email [email protected].
