Trentola Ducenta celebrates its patron saint on the second Sunday of May
The Patronal Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel is the appointment that has marked the religious and civic life of Trentola Ducenta for centuries. This town of just over twenty thousand inhabitants in the province of Caserta, Campania, lies in the heart of the Agro Aversano. The municipality notes that the festivities in honor of the patron saint are held on the second Sunday of May, in memory of the Archangel's first apparition on May 8, 490. It is therefore not the more famous liturgical date of September 29: here, popular devotion has chosen spring, when the town streets can safely host the long evening procession.
The heart of the festival is the Parish Church of Saint Michael the Archangel on Via IV Novembre. The building was constructed in 1614 and consecrated in 1723 by the Bishop of Caserta; it underwent significant renovations in 1878 and a restoration after the Second World War, around 1950. The facade is divided into two levels with a circular rose window, while a twenty-five-meter bell tower rises on the right side. Inside, a single nave with side chapels, a coffered ceiling, and a dome at the transept crossing house a remarkable artistic heritage.
The ritual that most involves the community is the solemn procession with the patron's statue carried on shoulders through the town center. It is a slow pageant, accompanied by the clergy of the Diocese of Aversa, confraternities, parish groups, and a large number of the faithful; families watch from their balconies, and shops lower their shutters as the Archangel passes. The liturgical celebrations in the mother church and the civic festivities organized by the Solemn Festivities in Honor of Saint Michael the Archangel committee revolve around the procession; the committee releases the full program on its social media channels every year.
In Campania, the patronal feast is not just a religious event: it is the day when a town recognizes itself, when those who have emigrated return, and when generations reunite in the same ritual. In Trentola Ducenta, this bond is so strong that the Saint Michael procession is considered a true common good to be protected. This was firmly recalled by the Bishop of Aversa, Angelo Spinillo, after the regrettable episode of 2026, when a dispute between two mayoral candidates interrupted the procession for a few minutes: the procession, the bishop emphasized, "is an ecclesial act, it is the people of God walking together."
For those visiting the province of Caserta, the festival is also an opportunity to discover an area often overlooked by mass tourism: Trentola Ducenta is just a few kilometers from Aversa and the Royal Palace of Caserta, and is a short distance from the Domitian coast.
The year 2026 followed the traditional calendar: on the second Sunday of May, this year May 10, Trentola Ducenta accompanied the wooden statue of Saint Michael the Archangel in procession along the streets of the center, following the liturgical celebrations in the mother church.
The edition made regional headlines for a reason unrelated to the festival: during the pageant, a dispute broke out between the outgoing mayor Michele Apicella and his challenger Michele Griffo, both candidates in the municipal elections, in front of the patron's statue. The procession stopped for a few minutes to the embarrassment of the faithful. The Bishop of Aversa, Angelo Spinillo, firmly deplored the incident, recalling that the procession "is an ecclesial act, it is the people of God walking together" and cannot turn into a political arena. In the following days, both protagonists publicly addressed the episode, while the parish community reiterated the exclusively religious nature of the celebration.
Beyond the controversy, May 10, 2026, confirmed the centrality of the devotion to Saint Michael in the life of the Caserta municipality: crowded streets, decorated balconies, and participation across all generations.
