About Saint Michael the Archangel

Every May 8th, Marcianise comes to a standstill for its patron saint, Saint Michael the Archangel. This date commemorates the Lombard tradition of the Archangel's first apparition on Mount Gargano, rather than the universal liturgical calendar. Following a novena at the Cathedral, the community gathers for a 7:00 PM solemn mass, followed by a procession carrying the saint's effigy through the historic center, from Via Duomo to Piazza Umberto I. It is a sober, deeply felt patronal festival in the heart of the Terra di Lavoro, in the province of Caserta.

A patronal festival in the heart of the Terra di Lavoro

The Patronal Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel is the most cherished religious event in Marcianise, a populous town in the province of Caserta, Campania. Every year on May 8th, the city pauses its daily routine to honor the warrior Archangel who has been its protector for centuries. The day centers around the Cathedral, featuring a solemn mass and a long procession that carries the saint's effigy through the streets and squares of the historic center.

Why May 8th and not September 29th?

Visitors are often surprised: while the liturgical calendar celebrates Saint Michael on September 29th, Marcianise celebrates in the spring. The explanation is historical, rooted in the Lombard world. Southern Lombards, deeply devoted to the Archangel, commemorated the May 8th date of his first apparition on Mount Gargano. Only later, after the abandonment of Arianism, was the autumn date added. Ancient Capuan documents confirm that this dual celebration persisted throughout the Swabian era, and in Marcianise, the May festival remained the "major" one.

The Michaelic cult in the Caserta region

Devotion to Saint Michael is not an isolated phenomenon: the entire Terra di Lavoro region counts about thirty places of worship dedicated to the Archangel, a testament to how deeply rooted the Michaelic cult is in this part of Campania. In Marcianise, the first church dedicated to the saint was likely built between the 7th and 8th centuries, possibly on the ruins of an ancient pagan temple consecrated to the god Mars, with its foundation attributed to the Lombards.

The Cathedral, home of the Archangel

The heart of the festival is the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel, the city's Cathedral on Via Duomo, belonging to the Archdiocese of Capua. The current building was constructed between the late 15th and early 16th centuries; the facade was redesigned between 1485 and 1490, traditionally attributed to architect Giuliano da Maiano. In 1524, Archbishop Niccolรฒ Schomberg granted it the title of collegiate church. Inside, the Latin cross layout features three naves marked by pillars with Ionic capitals under an 18th-century coffered ceiling; the earthquakes of 1930 and 1980 necessitated significant restorations.

Notable works include 15th-century frescoes, 18th-century paintings, sculptures of the Madonna and Saint Michael, and above all, the famous 1706 wooden crucifix by Giacomo Colombo, which is itself an object of great popular devotion.

How the festival unfolds

Rites in honor of the patron saint begin about ten days prior with the novena, celebrated every evening in the Cathedral as a spiritual preparation for the community. On the day of the festival, May 8th, celebrations are concentrated in the afternoon and evening:

  • Solemn Mass at the Cathedral, usually at 7:00 PM, presided over by the parish priest and concelebrated by the local clergy.
  • Solemn Procession with the effigy of Saint Michael the Archangel through the streets of the center, accompanied by confraternities, associations, and a large crowd of the faithful.
  • Traditional Route: departing from the Cathedral, then Via Duomo, Via G. B. Novelli, Via San Simeone, Via C. Battisti, Via Salzano, Via C. Grillo, Via D. Santoro, Piazza Umberto I, Via Roma, Via Quercia, and returning to the church via Via Duomo.
  • Throughout the procession, the Municipality issues an ordinance prohibiting parking and stopping along the affected streets.

A lost tradition: Saint Michael and Saint Venera

The May festival was once even more elaborate: the memory of the elderly preserves the recollection of a double procession that paired Saint Michael with Saint Venera. The statue of the saint, which stayed in her sanctuary on the banks of the Regi Lagni from the Friday after Easter, was brought back to the Cathedral on this occasion. This custom has since disappeared, but it remains one of the most evocative testimonies of Marcianise's popular religiosity.

The atmosphere in the city

The May 8th procession is a moment of collective identity rather than a spectacle: families step out of their homes and the center stops as the procession passes. It is the best opportunity to discover the authentic face of Marcianise, a hardworking city in the Caserta plain, just a few kilometers from the Royal Palace of Caserta.
