About Polenta Festival

Every autumn, Monteflavio, a village in the Lucretili Mountains at an altitude of 800 meters, dedicates an entire Sunday to polenta prepared just like in the old days. In Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III, Pro Loco volunteers fire up the copper cauldrons from the early morning, preparing a white pork spare rib sauce based on a generations-old family recipe. White polenta, red polenta with tomato sauce, local meat, wine, and folk music: an authentic, convivial, and no-frills village festival, just a few dozen kilometers from Rome.

An autumn Sunday around the cauldron

The Polenta Festival is the event that, for twenty years, has closed the village festival season in Monteflavio, a small municipality in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region. The village is located at an altitude of about 800 meters on the northern slopes of the Lucretili Mountains, in that Roman Sabina area known for its PDO extra virgin olive oil, pastures, and rustic cuisine. It is here, in the main square, that the fires are lit once a year under the large copper cauldrons.

The recipe of yesteryear

The heart of the festival is the long and laborious preparation, which begins well before the stands open. The volunteers of the Pro Loco APS Monteflavio boil water in the cauldrons, slowly pour in the cornmeal, and whisk it to prevent lumps; then, they switch to a wooden stick, stirring constantly until fully cooked. Meanwhile, in the kitchen, they prepare the famous white pork spare rib sauce, a condiment passed down through families in Monteflavio that serves as the true signature of the event.

What to eat

The menu is simple and hearty, as tradition dictates:

  • White polenta with white pork spare rib sauce;
  • Red polenta, seasoned with a classic tomato and meat sauce;
  • Local meats and traditional main courses;
  • Wines from the Castelli and Sabina areas, cheeses, and local products;
  • Homemade desserts prepared by local families.

The service is typical of Lazio festivals: long, shared tables, dishes served by volunteers, and a relaxed pace. In recent editions, the Pro Loco has introduced online booking in the days leading up to the event, closing the day before at noon, to better manage the turnout.

Music, the square, and conviviality

Alongside the food stands, the day unfolds with live folk music, dancing in the square, and strolls through the historic center. Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III, dominated by the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta and surrounded by ancient buildings, houses la pilocca in its center, a Renaissance fountain shaped like a salt mortar: a setting that gives the festival an intimate character, quite different from the large gastronomic events of the plains.

Why it's worth the trip

Monteflavio is not a mass tourism destination, and that is precisely its charm. The festival attracts visitors from all over the province of Rome and the Sabina area, yet it retains the tone of a festival made by the village for the village, where those serving at the tables are the same people who stirred the polenta at dawn. For those arriving from the capital, it is an opportunity to discover in half a day a mountain village, a humble dish cooked with care, and a corner of Lazio that is still off the beaten path.

The context: polenta in Lazio

While polenta is primarily associated with Northern Italy, it has an equally long history in the mountain villages of Lazio: it was the staple dish of shepherd and lumberjack families, cooked in large quantities and served directly on a wooden board. The polenta festivals of the Sabina and Lucretili Mountains — with Monteflavio being one of the most well-known — keep this culinary memory alive, with the local variation of pork spare ribs that clearly distinguishes it from northern versions.

Polenta Festival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Monteflavio Polenta Festival is expected, as per tradition, on a Sunday in October in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III. At the moment, the Pro Loco APS Monteflavio has not yet released the official date or the day's program: the indicated date is therefore only indicative and must be verified before traveling.

2026 Edition: what we know

After the twentieth edition in 2025, the Polenta Festival is expected to return to Monteflavio in autumn 2026, in the usual setting of Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III. As of the writing of this sheet, neither the official date nor the program have been published by the organizers: industry portals still report the absence of certain information regarding the next edition.

The formula, if confirmed, will remain the tried-and-tested one: opening of the stands around noon, white polenta with spare rib sauce and red polenta cooked in copper cauldrons, typical products of the Sabina, folk music, and the possibility of booking lunch in the preceding days.

Programme Polenta Festival 2026

Program not yet published. The Pro Loco APS Monteflavio usually communicates the date, menu, and booking methods a few weeks before the event on its Facebook page and on the event portals of the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital. Practical information — Polenta Festival

How to get there

Monteflavio is located about 50 km from Rome. By car: A1 motorway, Fiano Romano exit, or via Salaria (SS4) to Monterotondo/Nerola, then provincial roads towards the Lucretili Mountains. The final stretch is mountainous with curves: allow extra time. Public transport via Cotral from Rome is limited, especially on Sundays: a car is the most practical solution.

Parking

The historic center is closed to traffic during the festival; parking is available along the access roads to the village, just a few minutes' walk from the square.

Prices and bookings

Free entry to the event; you only pay for what you consume, with portions at popular prices available at the checkout. In recent editions, online lunch booking has been available, closing the previous day. It is advisable to check updated procedures and rates on the Pro Loco APS Monteflavio Facebook page.

Tips

You are at an altitude of 800 meters and in October the temperature drops quickly: bring a jacket. Arriving early helps to find a seat at the table and avoid the midday queues.
