About Saint Michael the Archangel in Greccio

Every year at the end of September, Greccio gathers to honor its patron saint, Michael the Archangel. The festival blends liturgy—rosaries, Eucharistic celebrations, and the solemn procession of the saint's statue through the medieval alleys—with local traditions, including brass band music, community dinners, and fireworks. It is a deeply felt event for the entire community of the Rieti Holy Valley, located in the Lazio town most closely tied to the Franciscan legacy.

The patronal feast in the village of the first Nativity

In Greccio, in the province of Rieti, in the heart of Lazio, the end of September has always been the time for the Patronal Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel. The village, world-renowned as the place where Saint Francis of Assisi created the first Nativity scene in 1223, gathers around its parish church dedicated to the Archangel, whose medieval bell tower overlooks the historic center and the Rieti Holy Valley.

An ancient devotion

The cult of Saint Michael the Archangel is one of the most deep-rooted in the central Apennines, and his liturgical feast, set for September 29th, has marked the calendar of mountain communities for centuries. In Greccio, the celebration extends over several days, giving the parish and the festival committee time to alternate moments of prayer with conviviality, as local families and those who have returned home for the occasion gather in the squares.

The procession and the band

The most anticipated moment is the procession with the statue of Saint Michael the Archangel, which winds through the narrow streets of the village accompanied by the G. Verdi Musical Band of Lisciano. The parade moves between the stone houses while the notes of the band alternate with prayers led by the parish priest; in recent years, retired Folgore paratroopers have also taken part, as Saint Michael is their patron saint. It is an image that perfectly captures the town's identity: popular religiosity, military memory, and a sense of belonging.

The popular side

  • Community dinner featuring pasta, offered by the festival committee on the evening of the procession;
  • Fireworks display that closes the main day, with lights reflecting over the Rieti basin;
  • Charity raffle on the evening of September 29th, the saint's liturgical day;
  • Daily Rosary and Eucharistic celebrations in the parish church, with the display of the saint's statue marking the start of the festivities.

Greccio around the festival

Visitors arriving for the festival will find a village worth the trip even outside the devotional calendar. Greccio is listed among The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy and preserves an intact medieval layout, with alleys, arches, and views over the valley. Just above the town lies the Sanctuary of Greccio, one of the four sanctuaries of the Rieti Holy Valley along with Fonte Colombo, La Foresta, and Poggio Bustone: the Nativity cave, frescoed chapels, and the friars' choir tell the story of the profound bond between these places and the Franciscan journey.

Why it's worth it

The Patronal Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel is not an event manufactured for tourism: it is the celebration of a village of just over 1,500 inhabitants, showing itself in its most authentic form for a few days. Those seeking the Italy of true traditions—where the band plays in the streets, the bell tower sets the pace, and dinner is shared together under the lights—will find one of the most sincere events in the entire province of Rieti here.
