Micigliano Chestnut Festival

A mountain festival at 1,000 meters

The Micigliano Chestnut Festival is one of the most cherished autumn events in the Upper Velino Valley, in the heart of the province of Rieti, in the Lazio region. The host village is one of the smallest in the region: just over a hundred inhabitants, perched at an altitude of about 1,000 meters on the slopes of Mount Terminillo, overlooking the striking Velino Gorges. This mountain location explains why the chestnut has never been just a seasonal fruit here, but a cornerstone of the local economy and cuisine.

The Antrodoco chestnut, the "mountaineer's bread"

The star variety of the festival is the Antrodoco chestnut (marrone antrodocano), obtained through grafting wild chestnut trees in the area: it is larger, sweeter, and much easier to peel than the common chestnut. For centuries, these chestnuts were called the mountaineer's bread in these villages, as they were a staple food capable of sustaining families through the long Apennine winters. Local tradition attributes the introduction of chestnut cultivation to the monks of the Abbey of Saints Quiricus and Julietta, who are said to have spread the practice in the area in ancient times.

The festival table

The heart of the event is gastronomic and takes place entirely outdoors, at the stalls set up in Piazza Brigata Alpina Julia. The menu is built around the chestnut, featured from appetizers to desserts according to recipes passed down by local cooks from generation to generation:

• Chestnut soup, the signature dish of poor mountain cuisine;
• Red wine-braised beef with chestnuts, slow-cooked;
• Chestnut purée as a side dish;
• Bread with ricotta and chestnut honey, a simple and iconic dessert;
• Roasted chestnuts, distributed for free in the afternoon.

Everything is accompanied by local wine, served at the communal tables that fill the square, which are an essential part of the festival's spirit: here, locals and visitors eat side by side.

Music, dancing, and fireworks

Alongside the food, the day is marked by live musical entertainment. The festival tradition includes folk groups, traditional dances, and accordion music, following the typical repertoire of the Apennine communities in the Rieti area. In the late afternoon, the square turns into a dance floor, and the day concludes with a fireworks display that illuminates the silhouette of the surrounding mountains.

A festival brought back to life

The event has a long history, which was interrupted for several years. After a hiatus of about five years, the Pro Loco of Micigliano brought it back to life in October 2024, with such public success that the organizers decided to continue: in 2025, the 32nd edition took place, confirming the format of the last Sunday of October. The initiative, promoted under the name Castagna Viva a Micigliano, also serves a protective function: bringing visitors to a tiny, depopulated village means giving visibility to an environmental and gastronomic heritage that would otherwise risk disappearing.

Those who arrive in Micigliano on the last Sunday of October will find an authentic festival, free of tourist artifice, in a setting of great natural beauty: chestnut woods in full autumn foliage, the peaks of Terminillo in the background, and a stone historic center that preserves the layout of the old mountain village. It is an ideal opportunity to combine the festival with a hike along the trails of the Montagne della Duchessa Nature Reserve or the Velino Gorges, just a few kilometers away.
