The Patronal Feast of Borgo Velino

In the small village of Borgo Velino, located in the province of Rieti and nestled along the Velino River at the foot of the Sabina mountains, October 9th is the most significant date of the year. It is the day the community honors its patron saints Dionysius, Rusticus, and Eleutherius, Christian martyrs venerated together in this corner of the Rieti Lazio region. The patronal feast is the event that unites the entire town more than any other, drawing back those who have moved away to reconnect with their roots.

The Patron Saints

According to tradition, Saint Dionysius evangelized Gaul in the mid-3rd century alongside his companions: the priest Rusticus and the deacon Eleutherius. In Borgo Velino, the three martyrs are venerated jointly, and one of the area's oldest churches, the Church of Saints Dionysius, Rusticus, and Eleutherius, is dedicated to them, preserving ancient architectural remnants. However, the heart of the celebrations is the Collegiate Church of Saint Matthew the Apostle, a parish church consecrated in 1787, known for its unique central plan featuring radial chapels and exquisite stucco work.

Faith, Procession, and Community

The day of October 9th blends religious observance with community spirit. The centerpiece is the solemn Eucharistic celebration in honor of the patrons, followed by a procession that winds through the historic center, accompanied by the faithful and, in keeping with local tradition, the sound of the town band. Surrounding the liturgy are the popular festivities that have always defined the fairs and celebrations of the Sabina villages: moments of meeting, sharing, and rediscovering local traditions.
