The patronal feast of Broccostella, blending faith and tradition in the Comino Valley
The Patronal Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel is the most anticipated event of the year for the community of Broccostella, a small town in the province of Frosinone, in the heart of the Lazio region. Nestled among gentle rolling hills at the gateway to the Comino Valley and overlooking the Sora basin, the village gathers every year around its protector saint in a celebration that intertwines faith, historical memory, and local life.
The feast falls on May 8th, a fixed date linked to the liturgical commemoration of the apparition of Saint Michael the Archangel on Mount Gargano. It is one of the two major dates in the Michaelic calendar and is observed in numerous towns across central and southern Italy: in Broccostella, it has marked the moment for centuries when the entire community comes together to honor its patron saint.
The heart of the celebrations is the Archpriest Church of Saint Michael the Archangel, located in the ancient village of Brocco Alto. With very ancient origins, the building is an important religious and historical landmark for the area, with its facade and sacred artworks preserving a deep sense of popular devotion. The solemn procession with the statue of the saint begins here, winding through the streets of the town accompanied by the faithful.
As in the most authentic patronal feasts of the Ciociaria, the day alternates between moments of religious reflection—Holy Masses and the procession—and moments of celebration and conviviality that involve families and visitors alike. The occasion is a chance to rediscover the identity of a village with medieval roots, evidenced by the remains of the castle and the watchtower, and to experience the hospitality of the local community.
Broccostella, which owes its current name to the union of the ancient "Brocco" with "Madonna della Stella," stands in a picturesque landscape marked by the waters of the Fibreno River and is close to the Posta Fibreno Lake Nature Reserve. The area is known for its traditional terracotta craftsmanship and genuine gastronomy, linked to local products such as trout and river crayfish. The Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel is thus also an opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Comino Valley, far from the major tourist circuits.
The 2026 Patronal Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel was celebrated in Broccostella, in the province of Frosinone, on May 8th, the fixed date of the commemoration. As per tradition, the day combined Holy Masses and the solemn procession with the statue of the saint, which passed through the village streets accompanied by the faithful, with moments of celebration and community gathering in the Comino Valley.
