The patron saint of Torricella and the historic Procession of the Four Winds
In the heart of the Ionian coast, in the province of Taranto, the small town of Torricella celebrates its patron saint, Saint Mark the Evangelist, every year with one of the most heartfelt festivals in the local calendar. The celebrations are concentrated around April 25th and involve the entire community: the five historic districts of the town, recently joined by the Monacizzo district, decorate themselves for the occasion and participate with their own banners and distinctive colors.
The most characteristic and defining element of the festival is the Procession of the Four Winds, an ancient rite in which the statue of Saint Mark is carried to the four cardinal points of the town. In each direction, the so-called rogations are recited—propitiatory prayers for abundant harvests—followed by the blessing of the countryside, the residential areas, and the nearby sea. Originally, this was a penitential procession during which the faithful walked barefoot; over time, it has transformed into a festive and highly attended celebration, with families and district representatives at the forefront.
Alongside the liturgical moments—the solemn Eucharistic celebration in the square, the symbolic handing over of the keys to the Saint, and the afternoon procession with the patron's effigy through the streets of the town—the festival offers a rich secular program. The Saint Mark's communal tables organized by the districts, the illuminations, the funfair, the food area, and the markets enliven the evenings, while concerts, street bands, and musical performances provide the soundtrack. There is no shortage of brass bands and the traditional fireworks that close the festivities.
Saint Mark, witness of Christ and announcer of the Gospel, is invoked by the Torricella community as the protector of families, the young, the elderly, and the sick. The festival, organized by the Saint Mark the Evangelist Parish together with the Festival Committee, enjoys the patronage of the Puglia Region, the Municipality of Torricella, and the Province of Taranto, testifying to its deep roots in the territory.
Torricella is located along the Ionian coast of the Taranto province, in a part of Puglia where the sea, the countryside, and farming traditions have coexisted for centuries. The patronal feast is the perfect opportunity to discover this authentic corner of the Taranto Salento, far from the major tourist flows, and to experience up close a celebration that unites the sacred and the profane with rare intensity.
The 2026 patronal feast of Torricella, organized by the Saint Mark the Evangelist Parish led by parish administrator Father Danilo Minosa, spanned three days, from April 23rd to 25th, under the patronage of the Puglia Region, the Municipality of Torricella, and the Province of Taranto. Alongside religious moments, the calendar offered a cultural meeting, musical evenings, and traditional civil festivities in the town's districts.
Throughout the days, the town was enlivened by the "Puccini" band of Sava (conductor Alessandro Pichierri), illuminations, a funfair, and a food area.
The celebrations take place in the center of Torricella (TA), centered around Piazza Mimino Lacaita and the Church of the Most Holy Trinity. Processions and festivities wind through the town streets and districts.
