Saint Mark, patron saint of Mantello
Mantello is a small municipality in the lower Valtellina, in the province of Sondrio, located in the Adda valley not far from Morbegno. Its patron saint is Saint Mark the Evangelist, to whom the parish church is dedicated, and his feast day falls on April 25th, the day of the liturgical commemoration.
The patronal feast combines religious and popular dimensions: the solemn Holy Mass and the procession through the village streets mark moments of devotion, while the community gathers for the sale of cakes and honey and for traditional Valtellina dishes, such as take-away polenta taragna with sausage. Often, the evening before the feast, there are social events like a 'tombola' (bingo) at the parish hall.
April 25th in Mantello, as throughout Italy, is also Liberation Day: the civil commemoration and the religious feast of the patron saint overlap on a day particularly felt by the community of the Municipality of Mantello, in the province of Sondrio.
