Three days of devotion, ancient trails, and fireworks in the upper Fortore Valley
In the municipality of Foiano di Val Fortore, in the province of Benevento, on the far northeastern border of Campania, the patronal feast of Saint John the Hermit is the most cherished event of the year. The saint, officially recognized as the patron of the entire Fortore Valley by a decree from the Congregation for Divine Worship on April 25, 2023, is celebrated on June 24th with three days of festivities involving the entire town and neighboring communities, many of which share the same devotion.
The heart of the festival is the long procession on June 24th. At dawn, around 7 AM, the statue of the Madonna della Libera and the bust of the patron saint leave the town and travel over 6 kilometers along the Tratturo di San Giovanni—the ancient transhumance route that crosses the Fortore hills—to arrive around 10 AM in the Mazzocca area, where a large fair also takes place. According to tradition, the return of the bust to the town is accompanied by a torchlight procession.
The pilgrimage destination is the small church built on the ancient ruins of the Santa Maria de Gualdo Mazzocca monastery, at the foot of Mount San Marco, about five kilometers from the town. The monastery was authorized by Pope Adrian IV in 1156 and became a powerful Benedictine abbey before being devastated by the 1456 earthquake and a fire in 1630; the chapel seen today was consecrated by an Archbishop of Benevento in the 18th century. The site is now the Diocesan Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Gualdo and Saint John the Hermit.
Among the most characteristic rites of the Foiano festival are the Vesper Cavalcade and the imposition of the 'Lune', devotional gestures passed down from generation to generation that give the festivities an ancient flavor. Completing the scene are performances by local majorettes and a brass band that parades through the historic center for two days, following a sonic ritual that announces the festival in Sannio towns more effectively than any poster.
One of the most anticipated events is the Fortore Pyromusical, a fireworks display synchronized with music, which reached its eighth edition in 2026 and attracts visitors to Foiano from all over Sannio and the nearby regions of Molise and Puglia.
The civic committee organizing the festivities closes the festival each year with a major concert in Piazza San Giovanni: in recent years, artists such as Le Vibrazioni (2025) and Roberto Vecchioni (2026, who stepped in for Ron due to the artist's health issues) have taken the stage. For a town of just over 1,300 inhabitants, this is a significant cultural investment that transforms the square into a stage for Italian singer-songwriters for one night.
Foiano di Val Fortore sits at an altitude of 520 meters, amidst rolling hills, forests, and plateaus that mark the border between Campania, Molise, and Puglia. It is a territory of vast, untouched landscapes crossed by ancient trails, with a peasant cuisine featuring corn-based dishes, potato pizza, handmade pasta, and locally raised meats. The feast of Saint John the Hermit is also the occasion when many emigrants return home: more than just an event, it is a rite of belonging that strengthens a community scattered across the world.
The 2026 festivities in honor of Saint John the Hermit, patron of Foiano di Val Fortore and the entire Fortore Valley, focused as per tradition on the three days of June 23rd, 24th, and 25th, organized by the local civic committee.
The closing concert, announced in April with Ron as the headliner in Piazza San Giovanni, underwent a change just days before the festival: due to health issues requiring the singer-songwriter to take at least five weeks of rest, Roberto Vecchioni took the stage on June 25th, performing his most beloved songs, from «Chiamami ancora amore» to «Luci a San Siro».
The devotional structure of the festival remained unchanged, with the procession on June 24th along the ancient trail to the Saint John in Mazzocca sanctuary and the evening return of the patron's bust to the town.
June 23rd — Opening of the festivities in honor of the patron saint: the brass band parades through the town streets, the first of two days of touring the center.
June 24th, Feast of Saint John the Hermit — At dawn, around 7 AM, the procession leaves the town with the statue of the Madonna della Libera and the bust of the patron saint, traveling over 6 kilometers along the Tratturo di San Giovanni to arrive around 10 AM in Mazzocca, home to the sanctuary and a large fair. Throughout the day, the brass band continues its tour of the town; the return of the patron's bust is accompanied by the traditional torchlight procession.
June 25th — Closing concert in Piazza San Giovanni with Roberto Vecchioni, who stepped in for Ron, who was initially announced but forced to cancel for health reasons.
Throughout the three days — Eighth edition of the Fortore Pyromusical, performances by local majorettes, and the Vesper Cavalcade with the imposition of the 'Lune'. The detailed program with times was released by the festival committee on their social media channels.
The festivities take place every year in late June, spanning the three days of the 23rd, 24th, and 25th, with the patron saint's day on June 24th. The dates may be preceded by one or two opening evenings.
Foiano di Val Fortore is located in the upper Fortore Valley, on the border with Molise and Puglia: the town is practically only accessible by car. The most convenient railway station is Benevento, from where you must continue by road. Public transport connections are limited, especially on holidays.
The June 24th procession starts at dawn and covers over 6 kilometers on the dirt track of the ancient trail: those wishing to follow it in its entirety should wear comfortable shoes and bring water and a hat. In the evening, however, the 520-meter altitude makes the air cool: a sweater is useful for the concerts in the square.
