About Saint John the Baptist in Angri

The Patronal Feast of Saint John the Baptist is the most significant event of the year in Angri, in the province of Salerno. From the raising of the portrait to the novena, and from the dressing of the wooden statue to the traveling procession that winds through the city for over eight hours, the Angri community honors its Patron Saint around June 24th with ancient rites, illuminations, brass band concerts, and breathtaking firework displays in Piazza Doria and Via Longa.

Angri and its Patron Saint

In Angri, a town in the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area in the province of Salerno, the Patronal Feast of Saint John the Baptist is more than just an event: it is the heartbeat of the entire civil and religious calendar. On June 24th, the Nativity of the Precursor, the people of Angri unite in a collective ritual that blends devotion, family memory, and urban identity. It is no coincidence that the local saying goes, «Angri lives for Saint John»: the festival marks the return of emigrants, family gatherings, and the decorating of balconies and alleys.

A thousand-year-old legend

The origins of Angri's devotion are lost in a legend dating back about a thousand years. Two merchant ships trading with the African coast were carrying a wooden statue of the Baptist, carved—so the story goes—by an Amalfi sailor from the mast of an old ship. Rival sailors allegedly tried to steal and burn the statue, but it miraculously survived the fire; abandoned on land, it was pulled by an ox cart to the Angri countryside, where farmers discovered it. This discovery forged the eternal bond between the city and its Patron.

From the 1302 Collegiate Church to the June festival

The first documented reference to Angri's devotion dates back to 1302, when the church—built in 1181 by the priest Giovanni de Miro and originally dedicated to Saint Angelo—was rebuilt by Count Romano Orsini of Nola and dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. In 1475, a papal bull by Pope Sixtus IV elevated it to the rank of Collegiate Church, with an abbot and chapter. Today, the church, overlooking Piazza San Giovanni Battista, houses both the Byzantine-era wooden statue that is carried in procession every year and the 18th-century silver bust crafted by Neapolitan silversmiths, which was paraded in processions until the 1950s and 60s.

The festival as we know it seems to have taken root around the mid-16th century and was initially celebrated in August to commemorate the Saint's martyrdom. By the 17th century, according to municipal records, it had been moved to late June and early July, following the miraculous protection invoked against natural disasters. Rooted in the agricultural tradition of the Sarno Valley, the festival remains a grand thanksgiving of the farming culture for the harvest.

The rites that open the festival

  • Raising of the portrait: The image of the Patron Saint is hoisted in the square, officially starting the countdown. It is one of the most attended moments of the entire festive cycle.
  • Novena: Nine days of preparation in the Collegiate Church, from June 15th to 23rd, with well-attended evening celebrations.
  • Dressing of the statue and kissing of the mantle: On June 23rd, the wooden statue is dressed before the faithful in an intense and intimate liturgy.
  • Mass of the Light and the legend of the Puella: On the eve of the feast, the re-enactment of the ancient legend of the Puella—a figure that in Angri tradition recalls the torment of Herodias-Salome—accompanies the night of Saint John.

The traveling procession

The heart of the festival is the peregrinatio: for three consecutive mornings, the statue leaves the Collegiate Church and travels through the city on foot, neighborhood by neighborhood, covering routes that exceed eight hours of walking. It moves from the hillside area to the historic center and the outskirts, with stops at small altars set up by residents and the participation of confraternities and associations. The cycle concludes with the solemn nocturnal procession along Corso Italia and Piazza Doria, followed by the act of entrustment of the city to the Patron Saint in Piazza San Giovanni.

The civil program: illuminations, bands, and fireworks

Alongside the liturgical events, the Municipality of Angri and local committees organize a week of free civil festivities: illuminations in the Villa Doria gardens, brass band concerts, pop and rock evenings featuring cover and tribute bands, and street food stalls along the town center. The finale, however, is pyrotechnic: the historic neighborhood firework displays have given way to increasingly spectacular shows, with major firms competing in Piazza Doria and Via Longa. These are the fireworks that, in Campania, define the success of a patronal feast.

Why visit

Those arriving in Angri during these days will find a city entirely involved: you don't just watch the festival, you experience it. It is the perfect opportunity to understand how a great Campanian patronal feast works—devotion, brass bands, lights, and fireworks—just a few kilometers from Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast, and Mount Vesuvius.

Peregrinatio and entrustment of the city

From June 27th to 29th, the wooden statue traveled through Angri neighborhood by neighborhood: Saturday the 27th in the hillside area, arriving in the evening at the parish of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli; Sunday the 28th in the city center, after the dawn mass on the churchyard of the Collegiate Church presided over by Bishop Monsignor Giuseppe Giudice; Monday the 29th in the peripheral areas. At 11:00 PM on Monday the 29th, the solemn procession departed from Rione Colombo to reach Piazza San Giovanni via Corso Italia and Piazza Doria, where the act of entrustment of the city to the Patron Saint took place.

The grand finale

The closing took place on Tuesday, June 30th at 10:00 PM on Via Longa, with the grand firework competition entrusted to the Ruocco and Romano firms.
