In the small village of Melpignano, in the province of Lecce and in the heart of the Grecìa Salentina, the Patronal Feast of Saint George the Martyr is the most anticipated religious and civil event of the spring. Each year, around April 23rd—the day the Church commemorates the holy knight and martyr—the entire community gathers around its protector in a celebration that unites faith, memory, and the popular traditions of Salento.

Saint George the Martyr, Patron of Melpignano

Saint George is the primary patron of Melpignano, alongside the co-patron Saint Mary Magdalene, who is celebrated in the summer on July 22nd. The bond between the town and the Saint is ancient and is preserved within the Mother Church of Saint George the Martyr, which overlooks the square of the same name and serves as the village's main historical and religious landmark. In the cells of the Ducal Palace prison, engravings depicting Saint George can still be seen, serving as silent witnesses to a popular devotion passed down through generations.

The Procession and Religious Rites

The heart of the feast is the solemn procession: the statue of Saint George is carried on shoulders through the crowds and accompanied along the streets of the historic center in a pageant that brings together confraternities, clergy, civil authorities, and the faithful.
