About Saint Elijah Feast

Every year, between July 10th and 24th, the town of Sperone gathers around its patron saint for the Feast of Saint Elijah the Prophet. The event features evening novenas, the traditional 'flag tour' through local neighborhoods, dazzling illuminations in the square, and, most importantly, the historic day of the 'Battenti' (penitents) who arrive at the saint's church barefoot on July 20th. Alongside the religious devotion, a vibrant civil program offers concerts, brass band performances, children's shows, and a grand fireworks finale, enlivening this small town in the Baianese valley, in the province of Avellino, for two weeks.

A devotion born from the 1656 plague

The Patronal Feast of Saint Elijah the Prophet is the most deeply felt event of the year in Sperone, a small town in the Baianese valley in the province of Avellino, Campania. Local tradition traces the cult back to 1656, the year of the great plague: according to local lore, the prophet Elijah appeared to the parish priest, Father Giovanni Giacomo Galeota, urging him to care for a chapel dedicated to him. The healing of a plague victim using oil from the chapel's lamp did the rest, and the devotion spread rapidly throughout the Nola and Baianese areas, turning the site into a place of pilgrimage. In the 17th century, the church that still houses the venerated images was built on the site of the ancient chapel, later restored in the 19th century and decorated with Baroque features.

The Battenti, the heart of July 20th

The highlight is always July 20th, the liturgical feast day of the prophet. From the early hours of the morning, the town fills with the Battenti, devotees who reach the church barefoot as a sign of penance and devotion, many arriving from neighboring towns. Their arrival is greeted in the morning with an open-air celebration, while in the late afternoon, the procession carries the statues of Saint Elijah the Prophet and Saint Elisha through the streets, accompanied by the local band and community associations. It is a rite that is both austere and popular, one that has never been interrupted in Sperone and remains the most recognizable identity marker of the community.

The novena and the flag tour

The festival does not end in a single day. From July 11th to 19th, the evening novena is celebrated with the recitation of the rosary, Eucharistic celebrations, and prayers to Saint Elijah, also broadcast via live streaming for those living away. At the end of each celebration, the flag tour begins: the banner of the Festival Committee is carried each evening to a different neighborhood of the town, accompanied by the marching band.

  • Each evening concludes with a convivial moment offered by the residents of the district, featuring improvised long tables and homemade specialties.
  • The neighborhoods visited include Via Sant'Elia, Via Carlo Marx, Via Santa Croce (with the flag-raising ceremony), Piazzale Sant'Elia, the Brandolino district, and Via dei Funari.
  • During the same period, the Pro Loco sets up an information booth at Piazzale Sant'Elia, a reference point for visitors and pilgrims.

The civil program: the square lights up

Alongside the religious aspect, the Festival Committee builds an annual program of shows that has made the Sperone festival one of the most popular in the surrounding area. The official opening coincides with the act of entrustment of the community to the patron saint and the switching on of the illuminations, which symbolically marks the start of the festivities. Then come the musical evenings: the Grand Brass Band Concert on July 20th, an essential appointment of the Campanian band tradition, nights dedicated to young people, the family-friendly S. Elia Kid's Party, and the major headline concert that ideally closes the cycle before the final fireworks display.

Sperone, the Baianese and Campania

With just under 3,800 inhabitants and only 4.7 square kilometers of surface area at 175 meters above sea level, Sperone is one of the smallest municipalities in the province of Avellino, but also one of the most densely lived during the festival days. Inhabited since Roman times as an outpost of the oppidum of Abella (modern-day Avella), the village preserves two 19th-century palaces, Palazzo Borselli and Palazzo Vetrani. Visitors from outside the region will find here a very pure example of a Southern Italian patronal feast: the same square that welcomes barefoot penitents in the morning fills with thousands of people in the evening for a free concert. This coexistence of the sacred and the profane, without hierarchy, is precisely what makes the Southern Italian festival an anthropological event even before it is a tourist one.

Tips for your visit

July 20th is the day not to be missed for those seeking the authentic dimension of the rite, with the arrival of the Battenti in the morning and the procession in the late afternoon. Those who prefer a festive atmosphere can aim for the final evenings, between July 22nd and 24th, when the civil program reaches its peak and the illuminations outline the entire festival route. The evenings of the novena, less crowded, are the best opportunity to understand how a village festival really works: by following the flag tour, you cross Sperone district by district, as guests of a community that opens its doors.

Saint Elijah Feast โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Feast of Saint Elijah the Prophet was prepared by a renewed Festival Committee, officially presented in October 2025 and led by president Antonio Solombrino. The festivities opened with the act of entrustment of the community to the patron saint and the switching on of the illuminations, continuing with the novena, the flag tour through the neighborhoods, and a civil program that saw its most anticipated moment in the Ermal Meta concert on July 23rd in the market area.

A festival built by a renewed committee

The 2026 Saint Elijah the Prophet Patronal Feast Committee was presented to the Sperone community in October 2025, with Antonio Solombrino confirmed as president, Lucia Soriano as vice-president, and Anna Caramiello as secretary, supported by eleven members including several young volunteers. The stated goal was to return to the town a participatory festival worthy of tradition, and the program put in place fully confirmed this.

From the novena to the patron saint's day

After the solemn opening with the act of entrustment and the switching on of the illuminations, the evening novena took place from July 11th to 19th, accompanied each evening by the flag tour in a different neighborhood of the town. On July 20th, the day of Saint Elijah, morning masses were held, followed by the arrival of the barefoot Battenti and, in the late afternoon, the procession with the statues of Saint Elijah the Prophet and Saint Elisha.

The civil program

The entertainment portion was concentrated in the last six days, from the Frank Aiello & the Evolutionist concert to the 'Cittร  di Fisciano' Grand Brass Band Concert in Piazza Luigi Lauro, from the White Party to the historic Yuppies parade, up to the S. Elia Kid's Party on July 22nd, the Ermal Meta concert on the 23rd, and the closing on July 24th with the Ebbanesis and the fireworks display.
