A festival in the heart of the Marsica region

The Patronal Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua and Saint Vincent Ferrer is the most deeply felt occasion in Scurcola Marsicana, a village nestled at the foot of Mount San Nicola, in the Fucino Plain, in the province of L'Aquila. It is an event that gathers the entire community every year around its two patron saints, in a blend of faith, popular tradition, and local identity deeply rooted in the Marsica culture of inland Abruzzo.

The two protector saints

The village simultaneously venerates Saint Anthony of Padua, one of the most beloved saints in Italian popular devotion, and Saint Vincent Ferrer, a Dominican preacher who lived between the 14th and 15th centuries. The presence of both patrons uniquely characterizes the Scurcola festivities, which combine Antonian spirituality with the veneration of the miracle-working saint, in a centuries-old bond with the village's religious history.

The festival program

The festival alternates between sacred and secular dimensions. The central moment is the Solemn Holy Mass in the parish church, followed by the procession that accompanies the statues of the saints through the streets of the historic center, amidst prayer, music, and the participation of the entire population. Alongside the religious rites, the typical secular events of a village festival take place:

• concerts and live music in the square, with band performances and evening entertainment;
• artistic illuminations decorating the historic center;
• food stalls featuring traditional Marsica dishes and local products;
• folkloric shows and activities dedicated to families and children;
• firework display to close the festivities.

The festivities are organized by the Scurcola Marsicana Festival Committee with the involvement of the parish, the local marching band, and the village's associations.

Dominated by the ruins of the Orsini-Colonna castle and linked to the memory of the historic Battle of Tagliacozzo in 1268, Scurcola Marsicana is one of the most evocative villages in the Marsica region.
