The patronal feast of Laterza, blending faith, illuminations, and fireworks
The Patronal Feast of Maria SS. Mater Domini is the most anticipated religious and civil event of the year in Laterza, a town in the province of Taranto overlooking the ravines of western Puglia. Every May 20th, the entire community gathers around the Sanctuary dedicated to the patron saint, a destination of centuries-old devotion for the people of Laterza and pilgrims from neighboring towns. The festival is rooted in an ancient tradition that weaves popular faith with the very identity of the town.
Celebrations begin with the dressing of the Madonna's statue in the sacristy, a ritual reserved for devout women who pass this honor down through generations. On the day of the feast, the Bishop of the Diocese of Castellaneta presides over the solemn Holy Mass in the Sanctuary, welcomed in the square by confraternities, clergy, the Mayor, and local administrators, accompanied by a brass band. At the end of the service, on the churchyard, the most emotional moment takes place: the Mayor symbolically hands the keys of the city to the Mater Domini, a gesture repeated uninterruptedly since 1728, through which Laterza entrusts itself to the protection of its patron saint.
The venerated statue of the Madonna is then carried in procession along the streets of the historic center, from the Sanctuary to the Church of San Lorenzo, amidst crowds, hymns, and prayers. The pageant, led by the confraternities and accompanied by the band, crosses the town in an atmosphere of intense popular participation, renewing a bond that has united the community to its protector for centuries.
The religious dimension is complemented by a rich civil program. The streets of the center light up with lavish artistic illuminations, while the bandstand, adorned with lights, hosts brass band and pop music concerts. The highlight is the spectacular fireworks competition, which sees some of the most renowned pyrotechnic firms from Southern Italy challenge each other. There is no shortage of rides for adults and children, stalls selling cotton candy and delicacies, street performers, and the aromas of local gastronomy, such as meat cooked in the traditional oven.
The day after the feast, May 21st, the traditional town fair of Laterza takes placeโa deeply rooted commercial and community event with stalls of goods, local products, and handicrafts that enliven the town and extend the festivities. The Feast of Maria SS. Mater Domini thus remains, even today, the beating heart of Laterza's identity and its most authentic Puglia.
The 2026 Patronal Feast of Maria SS. Mater Domini was celebrated in Laterza on Wednesday, May 20th. In the Sanctuary dedicated to the patron saint, the Bishop of the Diocese of Castellaneta, Monsignor Sabino Iannuzzi, presided over the solemn Holy Mass. Afterward, on the churchyard, Mayor Franco Frigiola renewed the historic ritual of handing over the city keys to the Madonna, a tradition dating back to 1728. The venerated statue was then carried in procession along the streets of the center, accompanied by the confraternities and the band. The civil program offered illuminations, concerts, and the highly anticipated fireworks display, while the traditional town fair of Laterza took place on May 21st.
