In the heart of the Province of Taranto, nestled among the ravines of the Apulian Ionian arc, the small town of Palagianello experiences its most intense moment every spring: the Patronal Feast of Maria SS. delle Grazie, the city's Patron Saint. It is a deeply popular celebration that blends religious devotion with civic tradition, marking the rhythm of community life for generations.

Unlike many Apulian patronal feasts tied to the summer, the Palagianello festival centers on the Easter period: the main day coincides with Easter Monday, when the entire town gathers around its Protectress.

Rites and traditions

The most solemn moment is the Eucharistic celebration presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Castellaneta, Monsignor Sabino Iannuzzi, followed by the long procession that winds through the main streets of the historic center. Along the route, the most characteristic civic rite of the festival takes place: the handing over of the city keys, during which the Mayor symbolically entrusts Palagianello to the Madonna delle Grazie, a gesture that reinforces the bond between the community and its Patron Saint.

The sacred image of the Virgin is enthroned on the eve of the feast and carried in procession to the chapel, where it remains exposed for the veneration of the faithful. The celebrations do not end in a single day: starting from the Octave of Easter, they continue with further processions and liturgies, concluding on the last Sunday of May, a month traditionally dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Music, bands, and performances

The festive atmosphere is provided by brass bands which, according to a deeply rooted Apulian custom, enliven the days with their traveling concerts: over the years, groups from Rutigliano, Mottola, Francavilla Fontana, and Conversano have performed, along with the historic local «Città di Palagianello» band. The evenings conclude with musical performances and fireworks that light up the town's sky.

A symbol of identity

Organized by the Patronal Feast Committee in collaboration with the San Pietro Apostolo Parish, the festival represents much more than a religious event for Palagianello: it is an occasion for the community to reconnect, for emigrants to return home, and for families to gather. For those visiting the Province of Taranto in spring, it is an authentic opportunity to experience the devotion and folklore of the most genuine side of Puglia.
