The patronal feast of Torino di Sangro, blending faith, processions, and the traditional auction to the Madonna
The Patronal Feast of Maria Santissima di Loreto is the most anticipated event of the year for Torino di Sangro, a small town in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo, nestled on a hill just a few kilometers from the Trabocchi Coast. The Madonna di Loreto is the town's patron saint, celebrated with three days of religious and civil festivities held between the last Sunday of May and the following two days, involving the entire citizenry.
The heart of the festival is the veneration of the wooden statue of the Madonna, housed in the 14th-century Church of Maria Santissima di Loreto, a three-aisled building that dominates the historic center. The official opening is marked by a symbolic gesture: the Festival Committee entrusts the devotion to the city authorities, renewing the deep bond between the local community, the institutions, and the cult of the Madonna every year. The solemn procession winds through the town streets and is greeted by a shower of rose petals as it passes the bell tower.
Among the most characteristic traditions is the asta alla Madonna: in the afternoon, the faithful offer handcrafted items and natural produce as gifts, which are then auctioned off to support the festival and the parish. It is an ancient rite that testifies to the strong community spirit of the village and its connection to Abruzzese peasant culture.
Alongside the religious moments, the festival offers brass band concerts with traditional ensembles, square performances, market stalls, and food stands. The evenings conclude with the highly anticipated fireworks, which illuminate the sky above the town and the nearby Le Morge marina.
Devotion to the Madonna di Loreto in Torino di Sangro does not end in May: on the night between December 9th and 10th, the evocative Viso Adorno rite is celebrated, commemorating the legendary translation of the Holy House from Nazareth to Loreto. A night procession departs from the Le Morge marina area and climbs back toward the town along an ancient sheep track, accompanied by devotional songs, litanies, and refreshing stops with bread and oil. At dawn, on the church parvis, the community sings the 'Buongiorno alla Vergine' (Good Morning to the Virgin) accompanied by the band, in one of the most moving traditions in Abruzzo.
The festival is also the ideal opportunity to explore Torino di Sangro and its surroundings, from the sandy beaches of Le Morge and the Green Coast to the hilly hinterland of the Val di Sangro, in an authentic corner of the Adriatic Abruzzo.
The 2026 Patronal Feast of Maria Santissima di Loreto opened on May 31 with the symbolic handover of devotion from the Festival Committee to the city authorities of Torino di Sangro. The program, spanning three days until June 2, alternated between moments of faith and civil events: the solemn procession with the wooden statue of the Madonna through the streets of the historic center, the characteristic auction to the Madonna with the offering of handcrafted gifts and local produce, brass band concerts, and fireworks to close the evenings. A popular participation that renewed, once again, the unity of the local community in faith and tradition.
