The religious and folk festival held every August in Borgata Marina, Torino di Sangro

The Saint Michael the Archangel Festival is one of the most cherished summer events in Torino di Sangro, a coastal town in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. The festival takes place in August in Borgata Marina, the seaside hamlet that hosts the largest influx of vacationers during the summer, centered around the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel to which the celebration is dedicated.
The festival blends religious devotion with local tradition. The days are marked by liturgical services in honor of Archangel Michael alongside moments of community gathering. One of the most characteristic rituals is the auction of the Madonna, held in the afternoon: numerous citizens offer handmade gifts, local produce, or small artisanal crafts, which are auctioned off to support the festival. The brass band accompanies the celebration days with concerts, and the event concludes with traditional fireworks over the sea.
The three-aisled church in Borgata Marina houses the statue of the Madonna on her throne, the highlight of its artistic heritage: the gilded metal throne is the work of the D'Intino brothers. The festival revolves around this place of worship in a village that has seen its tourism appeal grow significantly in recent years.
Torino di Sangro stretches across a hill just a few kilometers from the sea, with six kilometers of coastline divided between the sandy beaches of Le Morge and the pebble shores of Costa Verde, both awarded the Blue Flag. The area also includes the Lecceta Nature Reserve and the famous trabocchi, the ancient fishing machines that symbolize the Costa dei Trabocchi. The Saint Michael the Archangel Festival thus fits into a rich summer calendar that weaves together the sea, nature, religious traditions, and community life.
The festival is usually held in the first half of August. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced by the Municipality of Torino di Sangro: it is recommended to check municipal channels for the updated program.
