Three days of processions and the ancient pilgrimage to the Consolazione Sanctuary
Every year, in the first days of May, the town of Deliceto, nestled 575 meters high in the southern Daunian Sub-Apennines in the province of Foggia (Apulia), renews one of its most heartfelt traditions: the Patron Saints Festival, which concludes with the famous Pilgrimage to the Consolazione Sanctuary. It is a popular religious event that involves the entire community and is rooted in centuries of history, set between the majestic Norman-Swabian castle, a declared national monument, and the green hills surrounding the village.
The festival pays homage to the town's protectors, whose statues are carried in procession along the streets of the historic center:
The most solemn and well-attended moment is the devotional walk on May 7th: at dawn, a long line of faithful leaves the Mother Church and reaches the Apparition Chapel (the small church of Olmitello), before continuing to the Consolazione Sanctuary. It is a route of about seven kilometers through the hills, with the silhouette of the village and its castle always visible on the horizon, as if the entire town were watching over the pilgrimage until its destination.
The sanctuary, the destination of the pilgrimage, is a place steeped in history and spirituality. Founded at the end of the 15th century by Blessed Felice da Corsano, the Consolazione Convent has hosted venerated figures of the Church over time: Saint Gerard Majella lived here, and Saint Alphonsus Maria de' Liguori stayed here, who wrote the famous Christmas carol "Tu scendi dalle stelle" within these very walls in 1744. A religious and cultural heritage that makes the Deliceto festival much more than a simple local event.
Numerous local organizations contribute to the success of the festivities: the Sant'Anna e Morti Confraternity, the Oasi della Pace Marian Community, the parish communities, the Municipal Administration, the Proloco Deliceto, and the Archeoclub. Between processions, hymns, and moments of reflection, the Patron Saints Festival is an opportunity to discover an authentic village in the Daunian Mountains, its identity, and its hospitality.
The 2026 edition of the Deliceto Patron Saints Festival took place from May 5th to 7th, inserted into a week of particular devotional intensity: from May 3rd to 10th, the town welcomed the relics of Saint Gerard Majella on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of his birth, with the urn arriving on Sunday, May 3rd, amidst the participation of hundreds of faithful.
The three days followed the traditional calendar of processions, concluding at dawn on May 7th with the seven-kilometer pilgrimage to the Consolazione Sanctuary. At the close of the festivities, on Friday, May 8th, the urn of Saint Gerard was carried from the Consolazione to the Mother Church for the solemn mass celebrated by Bishop Giorgio Ferretti.
The events unfold between the Mother Church in the historic center of Deliceto and the Consolazione Sanctuary, reached on foot along a hilly path of about seven kilometers.
Deliceto is located in the Daunian Sub-Apennines, in the province of Foggia. By car, it can be reached from the nearest motorway exits of the A16 or A14 and from the state roads of the Tavoliere; the reference railway station is Foggia, from where you can continue by road.
Access to the processions and the pilgrimage is free and open to all. For the walk on May 7th, which starts at dawn, comfortable shoes suitable for hilly terrain and layered clothing are recommended.
