The patronal festival of Fontanellato

The Patron Saint's Festival of Fontanellato, dedicated to the Holy Cross, is the event that every year on May 3rd brings together the entire community of the village in the Bassa Parmense. The festival revolves around the parish church of Santa Croce e San Benedetto, the ancient church that gives the town its name and religious identity, located in the square facing the famous Rocca Sanvitale.

An ancient devotion

The roots of the festival are embedded in the very history of the parish community. The chapel dedicated to the Holy Cross was built by Count Giberto Sanvitale shortly before the mid-15th century and completed in 1447 by his son Stefano; elevated to a provostry in 1503, it became an autonomous parish in 1511. Since then, devotion to the Cross has accompanied the life of the village, and the May 3rd festival is its highest and most participatory expression.

Religious celebrations

The heart of the day consists of liturgical celebrations in the Church of Santa Croce: the solemn Holy Mass in honour of the patron saint draws the faithful from the town and surrounding hamlets. Around the religious service are gathered the most traditional moments of the festival, such as the accompaniment of the band to the Oratory of the Assumption, a sign of the choral participation of the entire community.

Like many patronal festivals in Emilia-Romagna, Fontanellato's festival also combines the spiritual dimension with the popular one: the day is an occasion for inhabitants to meet, for families to gather, and for rediscovering local traditions. The setting is the evocative historic centre, dominated by the Rocca Sanvitale surrounded by its moat and famous for the Camera Ottica and the frescoes by Parmigianino, in one of the most visited villages in the province of Parma.
