The patronal festival of Fontanellato in the heart of the Bassa Parmense
The Patron Saint's Festival of Fontanellato, dedicated to the Holy Cross, is the event that every year on May 3rd brings together the entire community of the village in the Bassa Parmense. The festival revolves around the parish church of Santa Croce e San Benedetto, the ancient church that gives the town its name and religious identity, located in the square facing the famous Rocca Sanvitale.
The roots of the festival are embedded in the very history of the parish community. The chapel dedicated to the Holy Cross was built by Count Giberto Sanvitale shortly before the mid-15th century and completed in 1447 by his son Stefano; elevated to a provostry in 1503, it became an autonomous parish in 1511. Since then, devotion to the Cross has accompanied the life of the village, and the May 3rd festival is its highest and most participatory expression.
The heart of the day consists of liturgical celebrations in the Church of Santa Croce: the solemn Holy Mass in honour of the patron saint draws the faithful from the town and surrounding hamlets. Around the religious service are gathered the most traditional moments of the festival, such as the accompaniment of the band to the Oratory of the Assumption, a sign of the choral participation of the entire community.
Like many patronal festivals in Emilia-Romagna, Fontanellato's festival also combines the spiritual dimension with the popular one: the day is an occasion for inhabitants to meet, for families to gather, and for rediscovering local traditions. The setting is the evocative historic centre, dominated by the Rocca Sanvitale surrounded by its moat and famous for the Camera Ottica and the frescoes by Parmigianino, in one of the most visited villages in the province of Parma.
The Patron Saint's Festival is the moment when Fontanellato comes together around its identity: an authentic opportunity to discover the village, participate in the celebrations, and breathe the atmosphere of a community that continues to cherish its roots in the heart of the Parmesan plain.
The Patron Saint's Festival of Fontanellato also celebrated the Holy Cross in 2026 on the traditional date of May 3rd, confirmed by the local parish. The day focused on religious celebrations in the Church of Santa Croce e San Benedetto, accompanied by the band in the Oratory of the Assumption, in a recurrence that annually gathers the community of the Parmesan village around its identity of faith and tradition.
Fontanellato is located in the province of Parma, along the Via Emilia. By car, it can be reached from the A1 motorway (Parma or Fidenza exit) by following signs for the centre. By train, the reference station is Parma, connected to the village by local bus services.
The celebrations are held in the Church of Santa Croce e San Benedetto, in the square facing the Rocca Sanvitale, in the historic centre of Fontanellato.
