The patronal feast of San Daniele Po on the Cremona Po
The Festival of Saint Omobono Tucenghi is the patronal feast of San Daniele Po, a municipality in the province of Cremona overlooking the great river. It is celebrated on November 13th, the day of the saint's liturgical commemoration. Saint Omobono, a merchant and benefactor from Cremona who died in 1197 while attending Mass, was canonized by Pope Innocent III as early as 1199: he is remembered as the first layman and father of a family proclaimed a saint in the history of the Church, and is the patron saint of merchants and entrepreneurs.
San Daniele Po is one of several municipalities in the Cremona area that have chosen Saint Omobono as their protector, testifying to the deep-rooted devotion in the region surrounding the figure of this citizen saint. The festival takes place in the heart of the town, with the town hall in Piazza Fratelli Leoni as the reference point, and combines faith, tradition, and conviviality among residents, families, and visitors from the province.
The religious program includes the solemn Holy Mass in the parish church and the traditional procession with the statue of the saint through the town's streets. It is one of the most heartfelt autumn patronal celebrations in the area, at a time of year when the communities of the lower Cremona region gather around their patron saints.
San Daniele Po is also known for its Paleontological Museum and its connection to the Po River: the patronal feast is an opportunity to discover this authentic corner of the province of Cremona, far from the mass tourist circuits.
