The sacred representation of the Passion of Christ through the historic streets of Canosa di Puglia
The "Tutto è compiuto" Living Passion is an itinerant sacred performance that brings the historic center of Canosa di Puglia, in the Barletta-Andria-Trani (BAT) province of Puglia, to life every Easter season. The title reflects the final words spoken by Christ on the cross, summarizing the essence of the entire re-enactment: the fulfillment of the sacrifice narrated in the Gospels, relived through the city streets.
For one evening, the squares and alleys of Canosa transform into the Jerusalem of the Gospel narrative. The procession begins in Piazza della Repubblica and follows a route that touches via Gramsci, Piazza Umberto I, Corso Traiano, Salita Calvario, via Boccaccio, and Piazza Solferino, concluding on the castle hill, where the crucifixion is staged. Along the way, the scenes of the Passion unfold: the Last Supper, the prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, the arrest, the trial before Pontius Pilate, the climb to Calvary, and the final crucifixion.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco Canosa in collaboration with the Canosa di Puglia municipal administration and the historic center's parishes. Bringing the characters to life are around a hundred volunteer performers—citizens of all ages who don period costumes to animate the story. As the Pro Loco has noted, the goal is to "return to our roots through the direct involvement of many people," fostering social connection, participation, and an awareness of the community's Christian heritage.
The Living Passion has roots in an experience that dates back to the 1990s in Canosa. After decades of absence, the re-enactment was brought back to life in 2025, immediately garnering great public participation and becoming a highly anticipated event on the city's Easter calendar.
Strolling through the settings arranged in the historic center, following the procession of Roman soldiers, apostles, and townspeople, and listening to the voices while observing the carefully reconstructed scenes allows visitors to immerse themselves in a timeless tale. The "Tutto è compiuto" Living Passion combines religious significance, popular tradition, and the enhancement of Canosa di Puglia's urban heritage, offering residents and visitors a moment of profound collective emotion.
The second consecutive edition of the "Tutto è compiuto" Living Passion took place in Canosa di Puglia on Sunday, March 29, 2026. The event, originally set for Saturday, March 28, was postponed to the following day due to forecasted adverse weather, while maintaining the 5:00 PM start time.
The procession started from Piazza della Repubblica and traveled along via Gramsci, Piazza Umberto I, Corso Traiano, Salita Calvario, via Boccaccio, and Piazza Solferino, ending on the castle hill with the crucifixion scene. The organization was handled by the Pro Loco Canosa together with the municipality and the historic center's parishes.
