Easter Monday in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana: a blend of local flavors, history, and the thrill of flight
In the heart of the Garfagnana region, every Easter Monday, the town of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana (Province of Lucca, Tuscany) becomes the stage for Pasquetta tra le Nuvole, an event that weaves together mountain flavors, the historic legacy of the Este family, and the excitement of aviation. Promoted by the local branch of the Autieri d'Italia with the support of the Municipality, it has become a highly anticipated date for families and visitors looking to spend the day after Easter outdoors, nestled between the Apennine Mountains and the Apuan Alps.
The event takes place across two iconic locations in the town, linked by a free shuttle service (a distance of about 1.5 km):
One of the most popular activities is the Ariosto Walk, organized by the Vis Movendi Association: a cultural stroll that starts from Piazza della Stazione and winds through the Este-era town of Castelnuovo—where Ludovico Ariosto once served as commissioner—before climbing to the Fortress along the scenic Sentiero Ariosto. It is a perfect way to combine outdoor exercise with the discovery of the village's historical heritage.
The most adrenaline-pumping moment arrives in the afternoon: starting at 1:00 PM, helicopter tours are available (booking on-site), offering a privileged perspective of the Garfagnana region as you soar over the Serchio Valley, the ridges of the Apuan Alps, and the Apennine forests. The Osteria degli Autieri also opens at the Fortress, serving traditional dishes in a convivial atmosphere until late afternoon.
Pasquetta tra le Nuvole is also a chance to discover the food and wine of this corner of Tuscany: from mountain cured meats and cheeses to products made with Garfagnana PGI spelt and chestnut flour, as well as traditional breads and desserts. It is an event that tells the story of a valley where culture, nature, and fine dining have coexisted for centuries.
The 2026 Pasquetta tra le Nuvole was held on Monday, April 6, for Easter Monday, organized by the Garfagnana branch of the Autieri d'Italia with the support of the Municipality of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana.
The program maintained its two-hub structure: starting at 10:00 AM, the local market opened in the historic center, and activities began at the Fortezza di Mont'Alfonso, including model aircraft, kites, and bouncy castles for children. At the same time, the Ariosto Walk, organized by the Vis Movendi Association, departed from Piazza della Stazione along the Sentiero Ariosto up to the Fortress.
The Osteria degli Autieri opened at 11:00 AM, serving traditional Garfagnana dishes, while helicopter tours over the Serchio Valley began at 1:00 PM, with bookings taken on-site.
Castelnuovo di Garfagnana can be reached by car via the SS12 'dell'Abetone e del Brennero' road or, from Lucca, along the SR445 of the Garfagnana. By train, the station is served by the Lucca-Aulla line. The Fortezza di Mont'Alfonso is about 1.5 km from the center: a free shuttle service operates during the event.
The market opens at 10:00 AM, with activities at the Fortress starting at the same time. The Osteria degli Autieri opens at 11:00 AM, and helicopter tours (on-site booking) begin at 1:00 PM.
