A two-day trekking adventure along the Partenio ridges, with an overnight stay at the Toppo del Monaco mountain hut.
Partenio in Cresta is a two-day trekking experience held in Pietrastornina, an Irpinian town nestled within the Partenio Regional Park in the province of Avellino, in the green heart of Campania. Organized by Outdoor Explorer, the initiative combines two guided circular hikes with an overnight stay in a mountain hut: a formula designed for those who want to experience the mountains at a leisurely pace, without the rush of returning to the valley at the end of the day.
The starting and ending point is the Toppo del Monaco mountain hut, located at an altitude of about 1,160 meters above the village of Pietrastornina. Participants meet here on Saturday morning, drop off their luggage, and return in the evening for social time and an overnight stay. The hut thus becomes the base camp for the two days: a place to rest, share stories of the trail, and set off again the next day after breakfast.
The program includes two distinct circular routes. The first, on Saturday, follows the Partenio ridges; the second, on Sunday, explores different environments and viewpoints, alternating between trail sections, scenic stops, and moments of naturalistic interpretation. The massif's ancient beech forests and open ridges follow one another along the path, with an E (hiking) difficulty level and a moderate physical exertion level defined by the organizers.
On clear days, the view from the ridges stretches from Irpinia to the Caudina Valley and reaches as far as the Gulf of Naples, with the silhouette of Mount Vesuvius and the island of Ischia on the horizon. This is one of the features that make the Partenio recognizable: a mountain very close to the city, yet capable of offering the vast visual scope of the great Apennine ranges.
Both excursions are led by an AGAE Environmental Hiking Guide. The guidance goes beyond just leading the group: along the way, there are activities focused on landscape reading and environmental interpretation of the Regional Park, as well as practical and technical advice for those new to trekking or looking to improve their autonomy in the mountains.
The number of participants is limited and booking is mandatory: this is a small-group experience, which is necessary for both safety and the quality of the guidance. Participants must be able to walk for the entire day on mountain terrain, with appropriate equipment and hiking boots.
Pietrastornina is a small town in the province of Avellino, just a few kilometers from the provincial capital, and is part of the Partenio Regional Park, the protected area that safeguards the massif spanning the provinces of Avellino, Benevento, Caserta, and Naples. It is a land of beech forests, springs, and historic trails, on the same mountain range that hosts the sanctuary of Montevergine, one of the most frequented pilgrimage sites in Campania. For those living in the region, Partenio in Cresta is an opportunity to rediscover a local mountain often viewed only from afar; for those arriving from further away, it is a unique way to get to know Irpinia, far from the beaten tourist paths and at the slow rhythm of walking.
The 2026 edition of Partenio in Cresta, organized by Outdoor Explorer, kicked off on Saturday, July 25, at 9:15 AM with the welcome of participants at the Toppo del Monaco mountain hut, above Pietrastornina, in the province of Avellino. At 9:30 AM, the group departed for the first circular route along the massif's ridges, with scenic stops and moments dedicated to landscape reading.
The return to the hut concluded the first day with an overnight stay at altitude. On Sunday, after breakfast, at 9:30 AM, the group set off again for a second loop exploring different environments and viewpoints, with new scenic stops and naturalistic interpretation activities, before returning to the hut in the early afternoon.
The declared difficulty level was E (hiking), with moderate physical exertion, and the guidance was entrusted to an AGAE Environmental Hiking Guide. The participation fee of 60 € included the two guided excursions with insurance coverage, the overnight stay, and environmental interpretation activities; an optional 15 € meal package added an aperitif, grilled dinner, and Sunday breakfast. Spots were limited and booking was mandatory.
