The international opening of the rowing season on Lake Piediluco
Lake Piediluco, nestled among the mountains in the municipality of Terni, has been the preferred training and racing basin for the Italian national rowing team for decades. Every spring, it hosts the Paolo d'Aloja Memorial, an international regatta organized by the Italian Rowing Federation (FIC) and dedicated to the memory of the official who linked his name to the history of this sport.
The d'Aloja Memorial is not just any race: it represents the official opening of the international competitive season. It is here that federal technicians test crews and the first national teams measure themselves in view of continental and world events. The regattas are held over the classic Olympic distance of 2000 meters, with heats and finals spread between Saturday and Sunday morning.
The event usually attracts about twenty nations and hundreds of athletes, with the Italian national team fully represented among Seniors, Under 23s, and Under 19s. For the village of Piediluco and the entire province of Terni, it is a prime sporting and tourist showcase, capable of attracting fans, industry professionals, and Rai cameras to the lakeside.
The 40th edition of the Paolo d'Aloja Memorial celebrated a historic milestone for rowing in Piediluco. The regatta returned to being the international season opener, resuming the classic Olympic distance of 2000 meters. On the Terni lake, approximately 300 athletes representing 20 nations competed: in addition to Italy, crews from Azerbaijan, Egypt, France, Great Britain, Greece, Lithuania, Moldova, Puerto Rico, Czech Republic, Serbia, Sudan, Sweden, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, Hungary, Uzbekistan, and Zimbabwe, as well as individual neutral athletes.
Technical Director Antonio Colamonici fielded a large Italian contingent, with 39 Senior athletes, 46 Under 23, and 10 Under 19 distributed across numerous crews. At the end of the finals, Italy dominated the medal table with 89 points, ahead of Greece (43) and France (21).
A total of 43 finals were held between Saturday and Sunday over the Olympic distance of 2000 meters, to determine the overall ranking of the Memorial.
Piediluco is about 15 km from Terni, reachable by car via the SS79 and by local bus service. Main train station: Terni, on the Rome-Ancona line.
The races can be watched from the lake shores and the equipped areas of the Nautical Center. The finals are usually broadcast live on Rai Sport and RaiPlay.
