Opera in the Limonaia of Panzano, in the heart of Chianti
Among the vineyards and olive groves of Chianti, in the heart of Tuscany, the PanzanoFestival brings the great operatic repertoire back to the village of Panzano in Chianti, in the municipality of Greve in Chianti (Province of Florence). The event takes place in the scenic Limonaia di Panzano, an intimate and charming space that offers the audience a unique experience, far from large theaters but close to the authenticity of the Italian operatic tradition.
The festival is organized by the APS Spazio Lirica association, founded in 1995 with the goal of providing a voice and opportunities to new generations of artists. In collaboration with StudiumFiesolanum and under the patronage of the Greve in Chianti municipal administration, the association has built a program that weaves together professional singer training with the presentation of full-scale operatic performances.
The core of the project is the selection of fifteen young opera talents, chosen through international auditions held in Greve in Chianti. Starting August 1st, these artists take part in OperaStudio, an intensive preparation phase held right in the Limonaia di Panzano under the guidance of director An Roos. It is an advanced training experience that culminates in public performances at the end of August.
Attending a PanzanoFestival performance means experiencing opera in a unique setting: the rolling hills of Chianti, world-famous for its wines and medieval villages, provide a natural backdrop to Rossini's music. Panzano is one of the most well-known villages in the Greve in Chianti municipality, a destination for food and wine enthusiasts and slow tourism, which in summer also becomes a small hub of Tuscan musical culture.
After a hiatus, the Spazio Lirica association brings opera back to the Limonaia with the ambition of making the PanzanoFestival an annual appointment, capable of uniting the training of young performers with the public's passion for melodrama. For the full calendar and participation details, it is best to refer to the association's channels and the "Estate in Armonia nel Chianti" initiative, of which the festival is a part.
The PanzanoFestival 2026 stages one of the masterpieces of the Italian comic repertoire, "The Barber of Seville" by Gioacchino Rossini, at the Limonaia di Panzano, in Greve in Chianti. The opera is performed twice, on August 20th and 22nd, 2026, at the end of the OperaStudio preparation program which began on August 1st.
