About Pantelleria Trail

The Pantelleria Trail is one of the most evocative events in the EcotrailSicilia circuit: a trail running race that cuts through the volcanic heart of the Pantelleria Island National Park, in the province of Trapani. Between lava flows, bush-trained vineyards, mountain ridges, and sea views, participants tackle challenging dirt trails that touch the island's most iconic spots. Alongside the 43 km competitive race, shorter events and non-competitive walks are available for all nature and hiking enthusiasts.

A trail race in the volcanic heart of Pantelleria

The Pantelleria Trail is a trail running event held on the Island of Pantelleria, in the municipality of Pantelleria, province of Trapani, at the southernmost tip of Sicily. Established in 2010 as a stage of the EcotrailSicilia circuit, the race aims to promote the Pantelleria Island National Park through outdoor sports, showcasing the geological, natural, and cultural heritage of this volcanic land.

A route through lava, vineyards, and the sea

Over 90% of the Pantelleria Trail paths are unpaved, crossing some of the island's most distinctive landscapes: lava flows, the ridges of Montagna Grande and Monte Gibele, vineyards cultivated with the traditional 'vite ad alberello' (bush-trained vines) which are a UNESCO World Heritage site, views of the Specchio di Venere lake, and dramatic coastal cliffs. It is a technical and demanding route, with steep gradients and challenging terrain, designed for those seeking an authentic nature-running experience.

The race program

  • Pantelleria Trail — 43 km competitive race with 2,300 m of elevation gain, start at 8:00 AM
  • Trail di Montagna Grande — 17 km with 1,000 m of elevation gain, start at 9:00 AM
  • Walktrail — 17 km non-competitive walk
  • Camminata del Monastero — 9 km walk with 300 m of elevation gain

The start and finish for all events are located at the Port of Scauri, on the southwestern side of the island.

Sport and territory

Organized by MOVEMENT SSDaRL in collaboration with ASD EcotrailSicilia, the Pantelleria Trail is part of a broader outdoor calendar that brings Pantelleria to life in late May, featuring trail running, vertical races, triathlons, and sea activities. The race combines athletic challenge with the slow, conscious discovery of a unique island where, as the circuit's motto says, nature always wins.
