About Panorra Festival

In Amorosi, nestled in the heart of the Valle Telesina in the province of Benevento, the four-day Panorra Amorosina Festival celebrates a humble traditional peasant dish: stale bread, beans, turnip greens, garlic, chili, and extra virgin olive oil, all slow-cooked in large cast-iron cauldrons. Piazza Umberto I comes alive with free or donation-based tastings, local product stalls, craft markets, and live folk music, with Sunday dedicated to the 'Panorra delle Palme' lunch.

Four days dedicated to a humble dish

The Panorra Amorosina Festival and Local Products is the most iconic gastronomic event in Amorosi, a small town in the Valle Telesina, in the province of Benevento, located in the agricultural heart of Campania. For four days, Piazza Umberto I transforms into a massive open-air kitchen: the panorra is prepared in giant cast-iron cauldrons in plain view and served to the public until late at night, amidst food stalls, local craft vendors, and live folk music. Admission is free, and tastings of the signature dish are free or donation-based, reflecting the spirit of sharing that is an integral part of the tradition.

What is Panorra Amorosina?

Panorra is a classic leftover dish from the Sannio peasant tradition, built on very few ingredients: stale bread of local production, the so-called 'amorosino' bread, beans (or chickpeas), turnip greens, garlic, a pinch of chili, and extra virgin olive oil. The garlic is sautéed in oil, then the cleaned vegetables are added, followed by pieces of bread and the legume cooking water: everything simmers slowly until the bread dissolves and absorbs the flavors, creating a thick, fragrant cream traditionally served in terracotta bowls. Born as a dish for cold days and the lean period before Easter, panorra embodies a philosophy of cooking that wastes nothing and is meant to be enjoyed together, as a family.

A traditional agri-food product

In 2025, the panorra of Amorosi was included in the National List of Traditional Agri-food Products (PAT) by ministerial decree no. 110765 on March 11, 2025: it is the first recognition of this kind obtained by the town. The result is thanks to the work of the Associazione Sagra della Panorra APS, chaired by Stefania Di Santo, which followed the entire certification process, proving the traditional use of the dish for over twenty-five years. The recognition was celebrated with a public event in the Conference Hall of Amorosi in April 2025, giving the festival a new role: no longer just a village fair, but an official showcase of a signature product of the Sannio region.

The Panorra delle Palme

The final day of the festival is the most popular and bears a name that recalls the local liturgical calendar: «La Panorra delle Palme» (Palm Sunday Panorra). In the morning, the town center hosts Coldiretti farmers' markets, featuring producers from the Valle Telesina and zero-mile products; at noon, the focus shifts to the traditional lunch with a fixed-price menu, dedicated to showcasing local cuisine. In the afternoon, the square fills with public karaoke, and the evening concludes with the food area and the closing concert.

Folk music, shows, and street food

Every evening, from 8:00 PM, the heated and covered food area opens, where panorra is accompanied by other traditional Benevento specialties and street food options. From 8:30 PM, the central stage hosts accordion players, folk music groups, tribute bands, and entertainment shows: a deliberately popular and danceable program, designed to keep families, groups of friends, and passing visitors in the square. Alongside the food stalls, local artisans display their crafts and small-scale local productions.

Amorosi, the village on the Volturno

Amorosi has just over three thousand inhabitants and is located in the western part of the province of Benevento, along the Volturno river, in an area of vineyards, vegetable gardens, and orchards that marks the border between the Sannio and Caserta regions. It is an agricultural context that explains the festival well: panorra is not a chef's recipe, but the meal of those who worked in the fields and needed to derive energy from leftover bread and seasonal vegetables. For those visiting inland Campania, the event is a rare opportunity to taste a dish that rarely appears on restaurant menus.

Why it's worth visiting

  • A nationally recognized PAT dish, served in the place where it was born.
  • Free or donation-based tastings, with cooking visible in cast-iron cauldrons.
  • Live folk music every night and a covered food area.
  • Farmers' market and Sannio crafts on the final day.
  • Authentic village atmosphere, suitable for families with children.

Tips

Arriving around 7:30 PM - 8:00 PM allows you to see the cooking in the cauldrons before the biggest crowds arrive; Saturday is the busiest evening. As it is a late winter or early spring event, warm clothing is useful for the evening hours, even though the gastronomic area is covered and heated.
