The humble dish of the Sannio region celebrated in Piazza Umberto I, featuring cast-iron cauldrons, local specialties, and folk music.
The Panorra Amorosina Festival and Local Products is the most iconic gastronomic event in Amorosi, a small town in the Valle Telesina, in the province of Benevento, located in the agricultural heart of Campania. For four days, Piazza Umberto I transforms into a massive open-air kitchen: the panorra is prepared in giant cast-iron cauldrons in plain view and served to the public until late at night, amidst food stalls, local craft vendors, and live folk music. Admission is free, and tastings of the signature dish are free or donation-based, reflecting the spirit of sharing that is an integral part of the tradition.
Panorra is a classic leftover dish from the Sannio peasant tradition, built on very few ingredients: stale bread of local production, the so-called 'amorosino' bread, beans (or chickpeas), turnip greens, garlic, a pinch of chili, and extra virgin olive oil. The garlic is sautéed in oil, then the cleaned vegetables are added, followed by pieces of bread and the legume cooking water: everything simmers slowly until the bread dissolves and absorbs the flavors, creating a thick, fragrant cream traditionally served in terracotta bowls. Born as a dish for cold days and the lean period before Easter, panorra embodies a philosophy of cooking that wastes nothing and is meant to be enjoyed together, as a family.
In 2025, the panorra of Amorosi was included in the National List of Traditional Agri-food Products (PAT) by ministerial decree no. 110765 on March 11, 2025: it is the first recognition of this kind obtained by the town. The result is thanks to the work of the Associazione Sagra della Panorra APS, chaired by Stefania Di Santo, which followed the entire certification process, proving the traditional use of the dish for over twenty-five years. The recognition was celebrated with a public event in the Conference Hall of Amorosi in April 2025, giving the festival a new role: no longer just a village fair, but an official showcase of a signature product of the Sannio region.
The final day of the festival is the most popular and bears a name that recalls the local liturgical calendar: «La Panorra delle Palme» (Palm Sunday Panorra). In the morning, the town center hosts Coldiretti farmers' markets, featuring producers from the Valle Telesina and zero-mile products; at noon, the focus shifts to the traditional lunch with a fixed-price menu, dedicated to showcasing local cuisine. In the afternoon, the square fills with public karaoke, and the evening concludes with the food area and the closing concert.
Every evening, from 8:00 PM, the heated and covered food area opens, where panorra is accompanied by other traditional Benevento specialties and street food options. From 8:30 PM, the central stage hosts accordion players, folk music groups, tribute bands, and entertainment shows: a deliberately popular and danceable program, designed to keep families, groups of friends, and passing visitors in the square. Alongside the food stalls, local artisans display their crafts and small-scale local productions.
Amorosi has just over three thousand inhabitants and is located in the western part of the province of Benevento, along the Volturno river, in an area of vineyards, vegetable gardens, and orchards that marks the border between the Sannio and Caserta regions. It is an agricultural context that explains the festival well: panorra is not a chef's recipe, but the meal of those who worked in the fields and needed to derive energy from leftover bread and seasonal vegetables. For those visiting inland Campania, the event is a rare opportunity to taste a dish that rarely appears on restaurant menus.
The seventh edition of the festival spanned four days, from Thursday, March 26 to Sunday, March 29, 2026, in Piazza Umberto I and the streets of the center of Amorosi. It was the first edition following the inclusion of panorra in the National List of Traditional Agri-food Products, a theme also at the center of a conference organized on Friday morning with the participation of experts from the ASL of Benevento.
Every evening from 8:00 PM, the covered and heated food area opened, with panorra served from the cauldrons along with other traditional Benevento specialties and street food; from 8:30 PM, the show started on the central stage. On Sunday, dedicated to the «Panorra delle Palme», the event began in the morning with Coldiretti farmers' markets and zero-mile products from the Valle Telesina, continued with the traditional fixed-menu lunch and the Festival Karaoke in Tour, and closed with the final musical evening.
Amorosi can be reached by car via the SS 372 Telesina, the road that connects Caianello (A1 motorway exit) to Benevento, crossing the Valle Telesina. The town is about forty kilometers from Benevento and about 30 from Caserta. The festival takes place in Piazza Umberto I, in the center of the town: it is advisable to leave the car in the adjacent streets and continue on foot, as the festival area is closed to traffic.
Food area open every evening from 8:00 PM; on the final day, opening is moved to the morning for the farmers' market and to the early afternoon for lunch. Stage shows usually start at 8:30 PM.
Free admission. Panorra tastings are free or donation-based; other dishes and street food are paid for directly at the stall cashiers. The traditional Sunday lunch has a complete fixed-price menu (20 euros in the 2026 edition).
Arriving around 7:30 PM - 8:00 PM allows you to see the cooking in the cauldrons before the biggest crowds arrive; Saturday is the busiest evening. As it is a late winter or early spring event, warm clothing is useful for the evening hours, even though the gastronomic area is covered and heated.
