The historic challenge between the four districts returns to the hamlet of Macerata after thirteen years
The Palio of Villa Potenza is the identity festival of the hamlet of Villa Potenza, on the outskirts of Macerata, in the heart of the Province of Macerata and the Marche region. After thirteen years of silence – the last edition was in 2013 – the Palio has returned to make the heart of the village beat again, bringing back to the square the historic rivalry between the four districts that have always divided the town: Torrione, Macina, Picchio, and Corona.
For two full weeks, the districts compete for the palio through a packed schedule of challenges. This is not a horse race like in more famous palios, but a popular and cross-disciplinary competition that alternates sports tournaments – five-a-side football, volleyball, briscola, and bowls – with traditional games linked to collective memory: sack races, relays, and the water-in-the-pot game. Over 350 participants defend the colors of their district, in a climate of healthy rivalry that unites generations: younger people rediscover their grandparents' games, while adults relive memories of past editions.
The rebirth of the Palio is the work of a Committee largely composed of young people aged 20 to 35, supported by the Pro Loco of Villa Potenza, the Municipality of Macerata, and the Parish of the Most Holy Cross. The event also retains its religious dimension, with the blessing of the teams and the solemn procession that closes the Marian month, intertwining civil celebration and popular devotion.
The highlight arrives with the concluding weekend, when Villa Potenza transforms into a true festive village: street food, live music, DJ sets, an exhibition of vintage cars and motorcycles, and the much-anticipated award ceremony for the winning district. A celebration that not only honors sport and games but, above all, the belonging to a community that has managed to rediscover an important piece of its identity.
The 2026 edition of the Palio of Villa Potenza, organized by the Palio Committee together with the Pro Loco, the Municipality of Macerata, and the Parish of the Most Holy Crucifix, took place from May 17 to 31, 2026, marking the rebirth of a tradition that had been dormant since 2013. The four districts – Torrione, Macina, Picchio, and Corona – competed in two weeks of competitions and games, involving over 350 participants and the entire community of the Macerata hamlet.
