Three days in the 19th century Marche, with a historical pageant, Barrel Race, and the challenge of the three districts for the Palio Castrvm Cingvli
For an entire weekend in July, the village of Cingoli, in the heart of the province of Macerata and the Marche region, leaves the present behind and immerses itself in the atmosphere of the 19th century. The Historical Re-enactment Cingoli 1848 is one of the most cherished costume events in the Macerata area: costumed participants bring the alleys and squares to life, including city officials, commoners, and nobles who recreate the customs, trades, and atmospheres of the 19th century.
The event originated in 1987 and is now in its thirty-seventh edition, organized by the Associazione Rievocazione Storica Cingoli 1848. Its mission is to research and promote the peculiarities of the 19th century through this re-enactment. Over the years, the event has been enhanced by the Palio Castrvm Cingvli, which in 2026 will reach its fourteenth edition, transforming the festival into a true competition between the city's three districts.
The competitive heart of the re-enactment is the challenge between the three districts into which the Cingoli territory is ideally divided:
The three districts compete in popular historical games and, most importantly, in the renowned Barrel Race, a spectacular event that determines the winner of the palio.
Three days marked by events that blend spectacle, history, and conviviality: the grand historical pageant that winds through the centre with hundreds of costumed participants, the Barrel Race, the popular historical games in Piazzale Cipolloni, the opening of exhibitions dedicated to 19th-century life, peasant evenings, and the elegant gala evening with period dances in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. There are also food stalls, with the traditional "Ristoro di Santa Maria," to accompany the festival with local flavours.
Cingoli, nicknamed "the Balcony of the Marche" for its panoramic position, offers an ideal setting for this re-enactment: a historic village that transforms, for a weekend, into an open-air stage where the entire community passionately and meticulously re-enacts its 19th-century roots.
The 2026 edition marks the 37th Historical Re-enactment Cingoli 1848 and the 14th Palio Castrvm Cingvli, scheduled from Friday, July 17 to Sunday, July 19, in the historic centre of Cingoli (MC). The three districts — San Giovanni, San Nicolò, and Santa Maria — compete for the palio through historical games, a pageant, and the Barrel Race. The festival is enriched by exhibitions dedicated to 19th-century life, peasant evenings, food stalls, and an elegant gala evening with period dances.
Cingoli (MC) can be reached by car via the SS361 or from the Castelraimondo-Macerata exit of the SS77 dual carriageway. The nearest train station is Macerata, from where you can continue by bus or car. The reference airport is Ancona-Falconara, about an hour's drive away.
The event takes place every year on the third weekend of July. The 2026 edition is scheduled for July 17, 18, and 19.
Events in the squares and streets of the historic centre are free to enter. Paid food stalls are available.
