A patronal feast that remains a local affair

The Palio di San Giorgio is the major annual event in Ripi, a hilltop village in the province of Frosinone, nestled in the heart of the Ciociaria region and the Lazio area. It takes place on April 23rd, the day the Church commemorates Saint George the Martyr, the town's patron saint. This is not a tourist-driven spectacle; it is a celebration passed down through generations of locals, featuring solemn devotions in the morning and lively, boisterous games in the afternoon.

The bond between Ripi and Saint George is ancient and still visible in the village's architecture. The Archpriest Church of the Most Holy Savior, built in 1743 and the town's religious heart, features a mosaic dedicated to the knight saint on its main portal. On April 23rd, the community gathers here for a solemn mass and a procession that winds through the historic center, which still retains the layout of an ancient castrum with its two gates, Porta Santa Croce and Porta Sant'Angelo.

The Palio: games of yesteryear

Once the religious observances conclude, the tone of the festival shifts. The Palio pits local teams against one another in a series of challenges rooted in Ciociarian folk traditions, passed down from generation to generation:

• Wheelbarrow race — the signature event of the Palio, performed in pairs along an obstacle course
• Log sawing — a test of strength and technique using a hand saw
• Sack race — the most beloved competition among children and spectators alike
• Tug-of-war — the traditional final event that decides the winner of the Palio
• Skill games — including ring tossing and the 'pentolaccia'

The events take place outdoors, in the squares and public spaces of the town, with spectators gathered closely around the competitors. Admission is free and participation is open to all residents organized into teams.

Ripi, the village hosting the festival

Perched at an altitude of 217 meters among vineyards and olive groves, about ten kilometers from Frosinone and a hundred from Rome, Ripi is a village of Roman origin that entered documented history in the 9th century via two papal bulls linked to the bishops of Veroli. Over the centuries, it fell under the control of the Ceccano, Borgia, and Colonna families, who left their mark on the town's palaces, from Palazzo Galloni (formerly Colonna) to Palazzo Candia.

Visitors arriving for the festival can take the opportunity to visit the Energy Museum, a scientific and geological museum and educational laboratory built around the history of local oil wells and the restoration of an ancient public washhouse, as well as the Sanctuary of the Madonna Succurre Miseris on the Santa Maria hill. Just outside the town, one can find the archaeological remains of San Silvestro and traces of Roman roads.

Dining during the festival

Ripana cuisine is the rustic, peasant food of the Ciociaria: maltagliati and beans, hand-rolled egg fettuccine, fried pizzas, and, during the Easter season which often overlaps with the patron saint's date, the pigna, a typical leavened cake. During the festival, local associations often set up food stalls serving traditional dishes.

A calendar of festivities that continues

The Palio di San Giorgio effectively kicks off the season of Ripi festivals, followed by the Easter Monday fair, the feast of Saint John the Baptist on June 24th, and summer celebrations between July and August. For visitors wanting to experience how a patronal feast is still lived today in the Lazio hinterland, April 23rd in Ripi remains the best opportunity.
