The Palio delle Contrade - Roseto Without Borders is one of the most vibrant and heartfelt events of the summer in Roseto degli Abruzzi, a coastal town in the province of Teramo. Established in 2024, the Palio has quickly captured the heart of the community, becoming an unmissable fixture in the municipal "Eventi d'Amare" summer calendar.

The challenge takes place in the scenic ancient village of Montepagano, the hillside hamlet that overlooks Roseto with its medieval alleys, glimpses of the Adriatic Sea, and old-world atmosphere. It is here, among historic squares and narrow streets, that twelve districts - formed by the neighborhoods and hamlets of the Roseto area - face off in a series of fun and engaging popular games.

How the challenge works

The event opens with the presentation and parade of the districts, each with its own colors, banners, and chants. This is followed by three traditional games that test team spirit and dexterity: the Spoon Game, the Brick Game, and the Sponge Game. The top-ranked teams advance to a surprise final game, which determines the district that wins the Palio trophy.

In addition to the main trophy, two highly coveted awards are presented: the prize for Best Cheering and the one for Best Parade, which reward the participation, creativity, and enthusiasm of the districts. In the first edition, the trophy went to the San Giovanni district, while Montepagano won the award for best cheering and Santa Petronilla for the best parade.

A community celebration

More than just a competition, the Palio delle Contrade is a moment when Roseto degli Abruzzi shows itself as a city "without borders": neighborhoods and hamlets, from the center to the hills, come together to share an evening of games, music, food stalls, and joy. The initiative is promoted by the ASD Polisportiva Montepagano with the support of the Municipality of Roseto degli Abruzzi, in the province of Teramo, as part of the regional summer programming of Abruzzo.

The setting of Montepagano, one of the most picturesque villages on the Teramo coast, makes the Palio a perfect occasion for visitors and tourists as well: you can stroll through the historic alleys, enjoy the view of the Adriatic coastline, and experience an authentic and growing popular tradition firsthand.
