The traditional barrel-rolling challenge in the medieval village of San Gusmè
The Palio delle Botti nel Chianti is one of the most cherished events in San Gusmè, a small fortified hamlet in the municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the province of Siena. Every year at the end of May, the streets and the picturesque Piazza Castelli become the stage for a challenge that celebrates the deep bond between this land and wine culture: the rolling of barrels, a symbol of the historic work in Chianti cellars.
At the heart of the event is the competition between barrel rollers, organized into teams that face off in qualifying heats and finals. The format includes both women's and men's categories: athletes must roll heavy wooden barrels by hand along a course winding through the village walls, in a true test of strength, technique, and teamwork. Team presentations open the afternoon, followed by qualifiers and finals, leading up to the awards ceremony in Piazza Castelli.
The Palio is about more than just competition; the day transforms into a grand village festival. After the races, the village welcomes visitors with the AperiGIN tasting, dedicated to local gin, and a grand grilled meat buffet accompanied by local specialties. The evening continues with DJ sets and themed bars, creating a convivial atmosphere that brings locals and tourists together until late.
Perched on a hill overlooking the Chianti Classico vineyards, San Gusmè retains the charm of a medieval Tuscan village, with its walls, entrance gates, and quiet alleys. The event is organized by the Pro Loco San Gusmè, with the patronage of the Municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga, and offers an ideal opportunity to discover this authentic corner of Tuscany, amidst vineyard landscapes, historic cellars, and warm local hospitality.
The Palio delle Botti is part of a weekend packed with activities: during the event, the village also hosts GustaPassi, a non-competitive food and wine hike through the trails of Chianti, featuring tastings of local products. It is a perfect chance to experience the Sienese rolling hills while combining sport, tradition, and fine dining.
The 20th edition of the Palio delle Botti nel Chianti was held on Saturday, May 30, 2026, in San Gusmè, organized by the Pro Loco San Gusmè with the patronage of the Municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga. The program combined the barrel-rolling competition with a village festival in Piazza Castelli and along the village streets. The day concluded with tastings and an evening of music.
San Gusmè is a hamlet of Castelnuovo Berardenga (SI), in the Sienese Chianti. By car from Siena, it takes about 25 minutes via the SR438 and provincial roads; from Florence, the drive takes about an hour via the Chiantigiana road. The nearest train station is in Siena, from where you can continue by car or local bus connections.
Access to the event and the races is free. The evening grilled meat buffet costs 20 euros (drinks not included), and booking is recommended. For information and reservations, call +39 353 4681372 or email [email protected].
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing and suitable footwear for the village's terrain. The historic center streets are pedestrianized during the event: it is best to park in the areas outside the village.
