The district challenge and Renaissance pageant in the village of Corropoli
In the heart of the Teramo province, in Abruzzo, the town of Corropoli preserves one of the region's most vibrant and well-attended traditions: the Palio delle Botti, held in conjunction with the Celestinian Pentecost Historical Re-enactment. Every year, in the final week of July, the village transforms into an open-air stage where history, folk sports, and devotion intertwine over three days of festivities.
The core of the event is the challenge between the town's four districts. Teams of pushers compete to roll a 70kg wooden barrel by hand along a demanding 900-meter uphill course through the narrow streets of the historic center. Amidst tight turns, cheering crowds, and intense local rivalry, the fastest district wins the Palio. Races are held in various categories, from children to adults, culminating in a night-time final that determines the winning district.
The re-enactment is rooted in the ancient Celestinian Pentecost festival, once celebrated at the Abbey of Santa Maria di Mejulano. The grand historical pageant, featuring over three hundred participants in Renaissance attire, parades through the streets to recreate the 15th-century court: heralds and city officials, the Dukes Isabella Piccolomini d'Aragona and Andrea Matteo III, the Celestinian monks, and the four districts with their banners, all accompanied by musicians and flag-wavers. The winning district earns the privilege of carrying the effigy of the Madonna di Mejulano in procession on August 15th.
Alongside the main race, the program offers numerous folk games between the districts—from barrel gymkhanas to target shooting, nut-cracking, and barrel weight estimation—as well as food stalls serving local specialties, concerts, exhibitions, and performances. It is a collective celebration that involves the entire Corropoli community and attracts visitors from across Abruzzo.
Founded in 1983, the event is now included in the calendar of the Italian Federation of Historical Games and cataloged on the official portal of Historical Re-enactments by the Ministry of Culture, a testament to its cultural and identity-based value for the town of Corropoli and the entire province of Teramo.
The town of Corropoli, in the province of Teramo, hosts the 41st edition of the Palio delle Botti and the Celestinian Pentecost Historical Re-enactment from July 24 to 26, 2026, organized by the Associazione Palio delle Botti. Three days of festivities animating the historic center with the spectacular uphill barrel-rolling race, the Renaissance costume pageant, folk games between districts, and food stalls featuring local products, culminating in the final that crowns the winning district.
The 2026 program spans three days, following the format of recent editions: folk games and district challenges on the first day; pageant with costumed participants, blessing, and qualifying rounds on the second; grand historical pageant with over 300 participants, category races (children, youth, and adults), and the night-time final with the proclamation of the winning district on the last day. The detailed program with times will be released by the Associazione Palio delle Botti in the weeks leading up to the event.
