The ancient Roman re-enactment that brings the districts of Gavorrano back to the track
In the heart of the Grosseto Maremma, in Bagno di Gavorrano — a district of the municipality of Gavorrano, in the province of Grosseto — the Palio delle Bighe is much more than a simple village festival: it is the return of a collective memory. For decades, this re-enactment inspired by ancient Rome was the most anticipated moment of the local calendar, before disappearing for over thirty years. Its recent return, driven by the determination of the Bagno di Gavorrano Merchants' Association and supported by the municipal administration, has reawakened the town's spirit and restored an event capable of uniting entire generations.
For one evening, the historic center of the village turns into an authentic Roman village. The streets fill with food stalls, games for all ages, and costumed performers portraying senators, consuls, soldiers, merchants, playwrights, and priestesses, evoking the spirit of ancient Rome. The atmosphere is that of a great popular festival, where historical re-enactment blends with conviviality and the typical flavors of Maremma cuisine.
The highlight is the chariot race, which sees the various districts of the Gavorrano territory compete, each with its own colors: Bagno di Gavorrano, Caldana, Casteani-Castellaccia, Gavorrano, Giuncarico-Grilli, and Ravi. In its renewed version, the chariots are no longer pulled by horses but pushed by the strength of the competitors in a gripping race that determines the winning district amidst music, entertainment, and the passionate cheering of the crowd. It is this spirit of healthy competition between neighborhoods that makes the Palio a true symbol of identity for the entire community.
Part of a rich calendar of initiatives promoted by local merchants, the Palio delle Bighe is the pride of Gavorrano's events. Visiting Bagno di Gavorrano on this occasion means discovering an authentic corner of lesser-known Tuscany, defined by living traditions, hospitality, and popular passion.
For 2026, the Palio delle Bighe returns to Bagno di Gavorrano on Saturday, June 20, for its second edition following the successful restart in 2025. The Bagno di Gavorrano Merchants' Association, which organizes the event, has defined it as "the most anticipated event of the year".
As per tradition, the town center will once again dress up as an ancient Roman village with costumes, traditional games, stalls, and the spectacular chariot race between the districts. The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including times and activities, will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition (times, games, costume parade, and chariot race) will be published by the organizers closer to the event. The official date confirmed by the Municipality of Gavorrano calendar is Saturday, June 20, 2026.
Building on the previous edition, the day usually includes: the transformation of the center into a Roman village with games and food stalls in the afternoon, a costume parade with performers portraying characters from ancient Rome in the evening, and, following that, the chariot race with the proclamation of the winning district.
