The medieval re-enactment of Lugnano in Teverina dedicated to Saint Mary of the Assumption
The Palio dell'Assunta is the grand historical re-enactment of Lugnano in Teverina, a charming medieval village in the province of Terni. The event is inspired by the transcripts of the 14th-century Municipal Statute and aims to revive the history of the ancient village, dedicated to its patron saint, Saint Mary of the Assumption.
The heart of the palio is the competition between the four districts - Turris, Lapis in Gloria, Logge, and Campum Florum - whose archers vie for the silver ring. The re-enactment includes the reading of the proclamation in the square, the rite of the Knights' Investiture, the Palio del Popolo with the public archery competition, and the Palio dell'Assunta itself. A Musicians' Challenge also sees groups of drummers and trumpeters compete for the best choreography, performance, and historical accuracy of costumes.
The event, accompanied by flag-wavers, fire-eaters, historical dances, and jesters, is linked to the patronal festivities and culminates in the Offering of the Candle to the altar of the Assumption by the Municipality. Listed among Italy's historical re-enactments, the Palio dell'Assunta is one of the most defining events in the Terni area and southern Umbria.
