Historical re-enactment and grain festival in the heart of Rosolini
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Palio del Grano is the most cherished historical and cultural event in Rosolini, a town in the province of Syracuse, in the south-eastern corner of Sicily. Created to rediscover and promote the territory's farming and cereal-growing origins, the event traditionally takes place between late May and early June, transforming the historic center into a grand open-air stage. Conceived by Giuseppina Milceri and organized with the support of the Municipality of Rosolini, the Palio is now a highly anticipated appointment that attracts visitors from all over Sicily.
The heart of the re-enactment is the historical parade, featuring participants in period costumes evoking the atmosphere of old-time Rosolini, accompanied by musicians and flag-wavers. The most awaited moment is the Palio challenge between the city's historic districts—including Corso, Crocifisso, Piazza, Convento, and Carcara—who compete for the banner with games and trials inspired by ancient agricultural traditions. The event also hosts a gathering of historical parades from various Sicilian locations.
The festival is also a journey through taste. The Cucca Festival celebrates Rosolini's signature dish: a strip of pasta rolled out with a rolling pin, coiled, baked, and filled with cheese and sausage. Along the Via dei Sapori, set up in Piazza Masaniello, you can taste local products. There is also space for the Arte dei Madonnari competition on Via Sipione, where artists create themed works on the pavement, as well as exhibitions, art installations, and crafts.
During the days of the Palio, guided tours are organized to the historic center, the Feudal Village, and the characteristic caves of Rosolini, as well as the Hypogeum Basilica, a jewel of local heritage. Between Piazza Garibaldi, Corso Savoia, and the streets of the center, musical, folkloric, and entertainment shows follow one another in a festive atmosphere that involves the entire community.
The Palio del Grano represents for Rosolini and the entire district an opportunity to revive the sense of belonging to a community that, by looking at the past, draws inspiration for the future. It is one of the reference historical re-enactments in the Syracuse area and an important showcase for the popular traditions of south-eastern Sicily.
The 2026 Palio del Grano in Rosolini (province of Syracuse) will presumably return in the usual period of late May / early June. The official dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been communicated: for updates, please refer to the official channels of the event and the Municipality of Rosolini. The historical elements of the event remain confirmed, from the costume parade to the challenge between districts, up to the gastronomic traditions such as the Cucca Festival.
