The medieval re-enactment and the challenge between the contrade of the Savona hinterland
In the heart of summer, Giustenice, a small municipality in the hinterland of Savona, in Liguria, transforms into a medieval village. The Palio dei Carri is one of the most cherished historical re-enactments in western Liguria, organised since 1972 by the Centro Storico Culturale Jus Tenens.
The event commemorates a real event that took place in 1448: the destruction of the castle of Marquis Giovanni Del Carretto by the Republic of Genoa, as part of the struggles for territorial control. This historical episode forms the narrative framework for the festival days, featuring a historical costume parade and period settings.
The highlight is the Palio dei Carri itself: the town's contrade compete in a head-to-head race with two-wheeled carts pushed by hand, in Piazza San Michele. An exciting and spectacular race, demanding strength, strategy, and cheering, culminating in the winning of the palio (banner).
Alongside the competition, the festival offers a medieval dinner and food stalls with traditional dishes. It is an event that combines historical re-enactment, conviviality, and local identity, attracting visitors from all over the Savona area and keeping the historical memory of Giustenice alive.
The 2026 edition of the Palio dei Carri di Giustenice is scheduled for the end of July, following the tradition of holding the event on the days around the last weekend of the month. The precise dates will be confirmed by the Centro Storico Culturale Jus Tenens in the weeks preceding the event.
Three days of festivities with a medieval dinner, a historical costume parade, and the challenge between the town's contrade, who compete for the palio with two-wheeled carts pushed by hand in Piazza San Michele.
The kitchen usually opens at 7:30 PM, with the Palio dei Carri starting at 9:30 PM. Detailed dates and times for 2026 will be announced by the organisers.
Giustenice can be reached from the Pietra Ligure (A10) motorway exit, heading inland. The San Michele district and Piazza San Michele are the centre of the event.
Access to the events is free. The medieval dinner and food stalls are subject to a charge, in some cases requiring booking.
