The donkey race and three weeks of festivities in the heart of the Florentine Chianti
The Palio de' Ciuchi, part of the broader Art and Sport Festival, is the summer highlight in Cerbaia, a bustling village in the municipality of San Casciano in Val di Pesa, in the province of Florence, deep in the Tuscan Chianti region. Organized with passion by volunteers from U.S.D. Cerbaia, the event transforms the local sports grounds on Via Lorenzo Bini Smaghi into a vibrant meeting point for residents and visitors for nearly three weeks. The 39th edition takes place from June 4 to 21, 2026.
The heart of the festival is the donkey race, held at the sports field on the final day. Local jockeys ride the animals bareback, without a saddle, in a multi-lap race that demands balance, nerves of steel, and a good dose of luck. Competing for the Palio are the four districts of the village: Villaggio, Sugana, Pesa, and Cerbaia Nova. Following a beautiful custom, the banner is hand-painted each year by a local artist, making every edition a unique piece. The rivalry is fierce and fuels a healthy, spirited competition between the districts.
Before the race on Sunday afternoon, a historical pageant winds through the streets of Cerbaia with costumed participants, a marching band, and flag-wavers, bringing the atmosphere of ancient folk festivals to life. Traditionally, the parish priest blesses the animals and jockeys before the start. The day concludes with spectacular fireworks lighting up the Chianti sky.
Beyond the competition, the Art and Sport Festival is above all a celebration of conviviality. The food stall is open throughout the event, offering evening service and takeaway, with lunch service available on Sundays. The menu features appetizers, pasta dishes, pizza, and grilled meats, paired with local wines. Every evening, the bar area serves aperitifs, cocktails, and sandwiches, while music and activities enliven the night.
Combining racing, gastronomy, and entertainment, the Palio de' Ciuchi is a festival for all ages that blends sport, tradition, and fun. It is the perfect opportunity to discover the authentic village life of the Florentine Chianti, just a few kilometers from Florence, in a genuine and welcoming setting. Admission is free.
The 2026 edition of the Palio de' Ciuchi reaches its 39th edition and brings Cerbaia to life from June 4 to 21. Throughout the period, the food stall is active in the sports complex, accompanied by musical evenings and activities for all ages. The highlight is the final Sunday, with the historical pageant, flag-wavers, and the donkey race that awards the Palio.
The detailed day-by-day program is released by the organization on the Palio's social media channels. Free admission.
