About PalermoRema

PalermoRema is the rowing event that brings the Scalo di Sferracavallo, a seaside village in Palermo, to life every autumn, turning the protected marine area of Capo Gallo into a grand stage for sea sports. Two days are dedicated to rowing and canoeing: a competitive coastal rowing endurance race and the spectacular 10-kilometre non-competitive 'Vogalonga' towards Isola delle Femmine. An event that blends competition, Sicilian maritime tradition, and environmental conservation, which drew a record number of rowers in 2025.

Rowing and the sea of Sferracavallo

PalermoRema is the premier rowing event in the Sicilian capital, organized by the Circolo Velico Sferracavallo in the picturesque setting of the Scalo di Sferracavallo, an ancient fishing village in the municipality of Palermo. Created to promote all rowing disciplines—rowing, canoeing, and kayaking—the event takes place within the Capo Gallo and Isola delle Femmine protected marine area, one of the most beautiful stretches of the Sicilian coast, with its crystal-clear waters and nature reserve providing the perfect backdrop.

Two days of water sports

The event traditionally spans two days. The first is dedicated to the competitive Coastal Rowing Endurance race, a 5-kilometre sea rowing challenge reserved for FIC-registered athletes and foreign federations, featuring CR4x+ and CR2x boats divided into Under 19, Senior, Master Under 50, and Master Over 50 categories. Up for grabs is the prestigious "Carlo Ruvolo" Challenger Trophy.

The second day is the heart of the event: the Vogalonga, a non-competitive collective row of 10 kilometres open to all types of rowing and paddle craft. The start, generally scheduled for 9:30 AM from Casa Quarara, the club's nautical base, leads participants to the Isola delle Femmine, including a circumnavigation of the islet before returning to Sferracavallo.

A growing sea festival

Over the years, PalermoRema has grown into a highly anticipated fixture of the Sicilian rowing season. The 19th edition in 2025 saw a massive surge in participation, with approximately 350 rowers at the starting line, nearly double the previous year. Each year, the event kicks off the Sferracavallo Sailing & Sea Festival, a calendar of competitions and initiatives dedicated to the sea and sports that enlivens the village until winter.

Sport, nature, and maritime tradition

More than just a race, PalermoRema is a celebration of the maritime culture of Sferracavallo and the entire Province of Palermo. The choice of the protected marine area is no coincidence: the event promotes respect and protection for the coastal environment, combining a sporting spirit with ecological awareness. For participants and spectators lining the waterfront, the days of PalermoRema offer the colourful spectacle of dozens of boats cutting through the blue Sicilian sea.

Dates for the 2026 edition

The event is traditionally held in October. The official dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers; it is recommended to check the official website and the Circolo Velico Sferracavallo channels for updates on the program and registration.
