The Corpus Domini floral carpets in the village of Paglieta
The Paglieta Flower Festival (Infiorata) is the event through which this small Abruzzo village, perched between the Sangro Valley and the Adriatic coast in the province of Chieti, celebrates the solemnity of Corpus Domini. For an entire day, the streets of the historic center turn into an open-air art gallery: flower petals, plant elements, and natural materials are hand-arranged to form colorful carpets and paintings that accompany the passage of the Eucharistic procession.
Creating the floral carpets requires the work of dozens of volunteers who, from the early hours of the morning, sketch designs on the asphalt and fill them with petals, leaves, and seeds. Geometric motifs, sacred symbols, and compositions inspired by religious tradition take shape along the route in a blend of devotion and craftsmanship. It is a form of ephemeral art destined to last only a few hours, until the procession crosses the carpets: it is precisely in this fragility that the deepest meaning of the event lies.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Paglieta together with the Maria SS. Assunta Parish, which oversee the setup and coordination with liturgical celebrations. The Infiorata is a proud part of the heritage of the Municipality of Paglieta and, more generally, of Abruzzo, a region where numerous villages renew the ritual of the Corpus Domini flower carpets every year.
For visitors, the Paglieta Flower Festival is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic village in the Chieti hinterland and experience a day marked by the rhythms of tradition, art, and spirituality.
The 2026 Flower Festival in Paglieta was held on Sunday, June 7, the day of Corpus Domini. Starting from the early morning, floral carpets were set up along the village streets by volunteers from the Pro Loco of Paglieta and the Maria SS. Assunta Parish, with the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo as a reference point.
Petals, leaves, and natural materials brought to life colorful compositions and sacred symbols, arranged along the route of the Eucharistic procession. The event, open to all and free of charge, enlivened the entire day in the historic center of Paglieta, in the province of Chieti.
