The village of Pagliara celebrates Maria Santissima delle Grazie in early July
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Pagliara is a small hamlet in the municipality of San Nicola Manfredi, in the province of Benevento, Campania. Perched at an altitude of 365 meters on the northern slope of a hill overlooking the Sabato Valley, it has just over three hundred inhabitants and preserves the compact layout of a rural village, clustered around the parish church of San Nicola Vescovo. It is here that, in early July, the community gathers for the feast in honor of Maria Santissima delle Grazie: two days that combine liturgical and popular traditions, as has been the custom for generations in the towns of the Benevento Sannio.
The date is no coincidence. July 2nd is the day the entire Archdiocese of Benevento celebrates the Madonna delle Grazie, patron saint of the city and Queen of Sannio. In the provincial capital, the solemnity is marked by several days of celebrations in the basilica dedicated to the Virgin, and even the offices of the Archbishop's Curia remain closed. Local parishes, such as the one in Pagliara, build upon this centuries-old tradition with more intimate, yet deeply felt, local festivals. Here, Marian devotion is not just a folkloric memory; it is a cornerstone of the community's year.
The program is released annually by the parish through posters displayed in the village and announced on the diocesan website, usually a few weeks in advance. In the Marian festivals of the Sannio villages, the structure is always recognizable:
Visitors will find a festival on a human scale: no grand spectacles, but a direct connection with the locals and an atmosphere that, in the hillside villages of the Benevento area, has retained a spontaneity rarely found elsewhere.
The existence of Pagliara is documented as far back as 956, when an ecclesiastical act recorded the donation of a church dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian in loco Palearie to the monastery of San Modesto. In 1811, the small center had 316 inhabitants, a figure close to today's; here, time is measured in centuries, not tourist seasons. A geographical curiosity: Pagliara is an administrative exclave of the municipality of San Nicola Manfredi, separated from the rest of the municipal territory and surrounded by the lands of Bagnara, Ceppaloni, and Sant'Angelo a Cupolo, as well as municipalities in the neighboring province of Avellino.
San Nicola Manfredi is a typical Sannio municipality made up of scattered nuclei: in addition to Pagliara, it includes Monterocchetta, Santa Maria a Toro, Santa Maria Ingrisone, and Toccanisi, each with its own parish and calendar of festivities. The patron saint of the municipality and the parish of Pagliara itself is Saint Nicholas the Bishop, celebrated on December 6th, while the feast of Maria SS. delle Grazie brings devotion outdoors in the height of summer. For those who want to discover the most authentic Sannio, following this calendar from village to village is the best way to understand how inland Campania still lives its traditions.
The location of Pagliara, overlooking the Sabato Valley and a short distance from Benevento, allows visitors to combine the festival with a day trip to the provincial capital: the Arch of Trajan, the UNESCO-listed Santa Sofia complex, the Roman theater, and the Basilica of the Madonna delle Grazie, which is at the center of city celebrations during the same period. All around, the hills of Sannio create a landscape of vineyards and olive groves, which is also one of the great areas for Campanian wine, with the Falanghina and Aglianico del Taburno denominations just a short distance away.
The 2026 edition of Pagliara Festival has not yet been announced with official dates: the parish of San Nicola Vescovo, in the hamlet of Pagliara (Municipality of San Nicola Manfredi, Province of Benevento, Campania), usually releases the program via posters displayed in the village a few weeks before the festival.
The reference remains the solemnity of Maria Santissima delle Grazie on July 2nd, which is one of the most deeply felt Marian dates in Sannio: in Benevento, the Madonna delle Grazie is the patron saint of the city and Queen of Sannio, and local parishes align with this calendar. In 2025, the Pagliara festival took place on July 1st and 2nd.
For updated information on celebrations, processions, and times, it is best to contact the parish directly or consult the notices of the Archdiocese of Benevento.
Pagliara is a hillside hamlet in the municipality of San Nicola Manfredi (Province of Benevento), a few kilometers from the provincial capital. By car, you can reach it from Benevento by traveling up the Sabato Valley towards Sant'Angelo a Cupolo and Ceppaloni. The reference railway station is Benevento, well-connected to Naples and Caserta, from which it is necessary to continue by car or local bus services. The nearest airport is Naples-Capodichino.
Celebrations and festivities are free and open to the public.
Accommodation options in the hamlet are minimal: you will find hotels, B&Bs, and farm stays (agriturismi) in Benevento and the nearby towns of the Sabato Valley, all less than twenty minutes away by car.
