The Our Lady of the Rosary Festival is celebrated every year in Monacizzo, a charming village within the municipality of Torricella, in the heart of the Taranto Salento overlooking the Ionian Sea. The event takes place on the Sunday closest to October 7th, the day the liturgy commemorates the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary, involving the entire small community in a day that blends religious devotion, historical memory, and popular celebration.
Monacizzo is a place with a thousand-year history: older than the municipality of Torricella itself, its name is believed to derive from the Latin Monacorum Hospitium, linked to the presence of an ancient Basilian monastery built on a Magna Graecia temple. The village, dominated by a 16th-century castle, preserves a network of narrow streets, courtyards, and churches that provide a natural backdrop for the festival. The small church of Madonna di Loreto, already mentioned in a 1577 pastoral visit, and the church of Our Lady of the Rosary, built in the 18th century and home to an ancient congregation, are the focal points of the local devotion.
The traditional program opens in the morning with Holy Mass in the small church of Madonna di Loreto. In the afternoon, the Holy Rosary is recited at the parish church of San Pietro Apostolo, followed by a solemn procession with the statue of the Madonna through the streets of Monacizzo, accompanied by a brass band.
At sunset, the festival takes on a new atmosphere: the square comes alive with a concert of pizzica, tarantellas, and folk songs from the Salento tradition, accompanied by performances from local dance schools. An artisan market offers local products and flavors, while fireworks conclude the day, illuminating the sky above the village.
The celebration, revived and preserved by the Parish of San Pietro Apostolo following the disappearance of the ancient Rosary confraternity after the Second World War, is now organized in collaboration with the Municipality of Torricella, the Province of Taranto, the Festival Committee, and local associations. It represents one of the most heartfelt moments of the Torricella autumn, attracting devotees, curious visitors, and lovers of folk traditions to this corner of the Ionian Puglia.
