On the last Sunday of July, the Virgin of Victory returns to the village among the wheat sheaves
In Gambatesa, a village in the Fortore area of the province of Campobasso (Molise), the last Sunday of July is dedicated to the Feast of Our Lady of the Traglie, one of the most heartfelt and ancient celebrations in the village. The name derives from the "traglie", ancient wooden sleds without wheels, consisting of runners and a support platform on which, for the occasion, wheat sheaves are loaded.
The protagonist is the statue of Our Lady of Victory, which for most of the year is kept in a chapel immersed in the quiet of the fields. Every last Sunday of July, the Virgin leaves the sanctuary to be brought to the heart of the village, where she remains until the last Sunday of September: a gesture that represents the entrustment of the Gambatesa community to the protection of the Heavenly Mother, in anticipation of a good harvest, in close connection with the feast of the Assumption on August 15th.
The day begins at dawn at the Madonna's Chapel, with the country procession that winds through the fields and reaches the San Martino district, where the symbolic handover of the keys takes place. The procession then continues towards the Church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo, in Largo Castello. This is followed by the blessing of the wheat and the Solemn Mass; in the afternoon, in the square, the evocative threshing of the sheaves takes place. The evening is dedicated to popular culture, with the local folk group and food and wine stands.
The Feast of the Traglie is a rare example of a ritual that still combines religiosity and peasant civilization today. For those who want to discover the most authentic Molise, it is an opportunity to witness a living tradition, passed down for almost three centuries in the heart of the Fortore.
In 2026, the Feast of Our Lady of the Traglie renews in Gambatesa (CB) the ritual unchanged since the 18th century. On the last Sunday of July, the statue of Our Lady of Victory is brought from the fields to the village on traglie loaded with wheat sheaves, with the country procession, the blessing of the wheat, the Solemn Mass, and the afternoon threshing in the square. In the evening, there is space for popular culture with the local folk group and food and wine stands.
Precise times may vary from year to year: the final program is announced by the parish and the Municipality in the preceding days.
Gambatesa (CB) can be reached by car from the SS17 and the Fortore roads. The nearest train station is Campobasso. On the day of the festival, the town center is affected by the procession: it is advisable to park in the outer areas.
Every year on the last Sunday of July. The day begins at dawn (from 7:00 AM) with the country procession.
Religious events and procession are free; food and drinks at the stands are paid.
