The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival is one of the most beloved religious traditions in Santa Marinella, a seaside town in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region. It is organized by the Santa Maria del Carmine Parish, entrusted to the Carmelite Friars, whose church stands along Via Flaminia Odescalchi in the district that takes its name from the Marian cult: the Carmine district. The festival is part of the great Italian tradition of celebrations in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, whose liturgical memorial falls on July 16th.

The preparatory novena

The journey toward the solemnity begins with a novena that accompanies the community for nine days. Each evening, the parish church hosts a meditative Rosary with Carmelite Litanies, followed by Holy Mass led by the festival preacher. The sacred pageant departs from the Carmelo Church and winds through the district's most significant streets: Via Flaminia Odescalchi, Via Padre Lorenzo Van Den Eerenbeemt, Lungomare Guglielmo Marconi, and Via del Carmelo, before returning to the church. The sunset parade, with the sea as a backdrop, is one of the most evocative images of the Santa Marinella summer, featuring the faithful, confraternities, volunteer associations like the Misericordia, as well as representatives from the Municipality of Santa Marinella, the local police, and the Carabinieri.

July 16th, the day of the solemnity

The festivities culminate on July 16th, the liturgical feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. The day begins in the morning with Holy Mass and Lauds, continues with the meditative Rosary and Carmelite Litanies, and concludes with the Solemn Eucharist, presided over in recent years by the Bishop of the Diocese of Porto and Santa Rufina. At the end of the celebration, the Supplication to the Blessed Virgin is recited, a moment of intense popular devotion.
