Masks, games, and joy in Italy's easternmost town
For a few days, the Otranto Carnival transforms the historic center of this Salento town into an open-air theater filled with masks, confetti, and fun. Otranto, a jewel of the Province of Lecce and the easternmost point of Italy, provides a unique backdrop: the white alleys of the old town, the cathedral with its famous mosaic, and the Aragonese castle set the stage for a simple, genuine celebrationโfar from the massive floats, yet rich in warmth and local participation.
Organized by the Hydro association, the Otranto Carnival has a distinctly family-oriented spirit. The heart of the event lies in the activities dedicated to children: entertainment, games, and activities that fill the squares and alleys of the historic center, where kids and teenagers parade in their costumes amidst laughter and music. It is an opportunity for social connection and gathering for the entire community, engaging residents and visitors of all ages.
The highlight is Shrove Tuesday, when the center of Otranto fills with masks and moments of collective joy. In the late afternoon, the city comes alive with costumes, confetti, and shared celebration, marking a beautiful end to the Carnival season.
Carnival is a deeply felt tradition throughout Salento, from the grand floats of Gallipoli to the festivals in the villages of Grecรฌa Salentina. In Otranto, the celebration takes on a more intimate, family-friendly dimension, highlighting the historic center and the bond between the inhabitants and their territory. Visiting Otranto during Carnival also means discovering one of the most fascinating destinations in Puglia in a festive and unusual guise, well outside the summer tourist season.
The 2026 Otranto Carnival, organized by the Hydro association, brought the historic center of the Salento town to life with a lively and engaging festival, dedicated primarily to the youth. The event was spread across Sunday, February 15, with activities for children, and Tuesday, February 17, Shrove Tuesday, the highlight of the masked festivities.
Among the alleys and squares of Otranto, in the province of Lecce, the final day saw the city fill with masks, confetti, and moments of collective fun, confirming the family-oriented nature of this celebration in the heart of Salento.
Otranto can be reached by car along the Adriatic coastal road or via the SS16; from Lecce (about 45 km), follow the SP366. By train, you can reach Otranto station via the Ferrovie del Sud Est, with connections from Lecce. The nearest airports are Brindisi and, further north, Bari.
The activities take place in the historic center, which is largely pedestrianized. Access to the events in the squares is free. Dates follow the Carnival calendar, with events typically held between Sunday and Shrove Tuesday. It is recommended to check the updated program with the organizers and the Municipality of Otranto.
