About Ossola Trail

The Ossola Trail is a major trail running festival that draws hundreds of runners to Mergozzo every spring, set on the shores of the lake of the same name in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province. With three distances for all levels, scenic trails overlooking Lake Maggiore, and a start/finish line in the heart of the village, it has become a historic event for mountain running enthusiasts in the lush Piedmont region, further enriched by an insightful evening featuring renowned endurance athletes.

A trail running experience between lake and mountains in Mergozzo

The Ossola Trail is one of the most beloved mountain running races in northern Piedmont. It takes place in Mergozzo, a charming village in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province, overlooking the lake of the same name just a few kilometers from Lake Maggiore. The start and finish are located in Piazza Vittorio Veneto (Piazza Lago), in the heart of the village: a stunning sight as runners dash onto the trails, leaving the water and the lakeside promenade behind them.

Three courses for every ability

The event, organized by ASD Ossola Trail Events, offers three distances designed to welcome both seasoned athletes and those new to trail running:

  • Ossola Sky — 28 km with 1,900 meters of elevation gain, the premier challenge for expert trail runners.
  • Ossola Trail — 20 km with 1,300 meters of elevation gain, the classic distance that gives the race its name.
  • Ossola Speed — 10 km with 700 meters of elevation gain, a shorter and faster course.

The tracks climb the trails overlooking Lake Mergozzo and the entrance to the Ossola Valley, offering glimpses of the mountains and the water that make this race much more than just a timed competition.

A race with a soul

The Ossola Trail is about more than just sport: every edition is accompanied by an educational evening on the eve of the race and a charity fundraiser. It is an event that combines a passion for the mountains, sporting culture, and solidarity, set in a natural landscape of great beauty in northern Piedmont.

Why participate

For trail enthusiasts, the Ossola Trail is an unmissable date on the spring calendar: varied distances, professional organization, lake views, and a warm, authentic village atmosphere. Mergozzo, with its lakeside promenade and ancient village center, provides the ideal backdrop for a day entirely dedicated to running in nature.
